Genuine question here - does anyone still use the phrase 'G.I. Joe' in this way? I've never heard anyone use it - but I'm in the UK and maybe it's still regularly dropped into conversation stateside. Although when I asked my American relatives about it I just got blank looks... they were familiar with the IP, but not the original nickname.
The impression I get is that the 'G.I. Joe' name made sense when the brand was launched in the 1960's but the phrase was falling (or had already fallen) out of use by the time of the 80's relaunch. Hasbro probably should have ditched it then, but presumably they kept it because they still wanted to appeal to existing fans of the brand. But as I say - that's just my impression. I'd be interested to know if the phrase is still used in the US. POV: Global Integration and Joint Operations Executive? Not mine, not sure if a tanker came up with this or if it was used by Hasbro at some point. Action Force sounds cool but the really bad ass units have names like Studies and Observation Group or Studies and Analysis. |

Im saying that Hasbro didn?t market GI Joe as Action Force in the UK. Action Force was Palitoy property, marketed at home and later licensed Hasbro designs. |

It was Palitoy until 1991 or 1994. Palitoy just licensed the Joe designs for Action Force from Hasbro. Just like they licensed the rights to produce Star Wars toys from Kenner/Lucasfilm. I?m pretty sure Hasbro had no control of Action Force until after 1991 Tonka/Kenner merger.

I take the point that it wasn't purely Hasbro's decision to brand it as Action Force. It was built on top of the Action Man and Palitoy brand. Hasbro did eventually rebrand Action Force as GI Joe in the UK. Edit - BFTB site has the 1987 figures onwards as Hasbro UK rather than Palitoy. Last edited by shishi; 08-14-2023 at 06:24 AM.. |

I thought Hasbro UK took over control in about 1987 when the line in the UK was relaunched with Joe style card backs and the Marvel UK comic. Prior to that the initial post-Red Shadows wave of GI Joe designs had the AF and Action Man logos. We got "Action Force the Movie" after that.

There is a tremendous difference between toys and film.

Upon further review, I was wrong. It looks like Palitoy ceded control of specifically the AF line in 85 after the death of one of the owners. I think my original point is still correct BUT I admit I was very wrong on at what point Hasbro had control of marketing in Europe. My apologies and thanks for correcting me.

As for the original question, I'm all for "American Imperialism" and patriotism, but I have no opinion on whether it would be a huge blockbuster success, because I don't care how much money some multi-billionaire in Cali makes, so long as it is an enjoyable flick and I get some good toys out of it. |
