I'm not a DIC fan or at least I don't want to go there because the Sunbow cartoons and Hama Comics were gospel to me. I abandoned Joe in the 90s and have recently discovered that some figures do have a certain odd coolness about them. As mentioned initially, I like mixing up the figures with earlier era characters and hardware, but think I'm missing their backdrop heritage. I tried watching a couple of DIC episodes but turned them off because I didn't want to poison my nostalgia of the original 80s Joes. How do you all that grew up with and collected the 80s stuff partition your nostalgic emotions so to speak? That is if there are any left. Mine are sadly being sapped away with time. I appreciate the conservativeness if you will, of being expertly educated with the toys and retaining the accuracy of aligning who and what to when. Absolutely.
But after all of that is done..."I assume the premise is ultimately...just have fun!" |

The DIC series was really poorly written compared to the Sunbow series, so I never got the same connection to them. I was also a big comic reader, and many of the DIC characters did not have prominent roles in the book, which also lessened them in my eyes. Finally, the figures just weren't as cool as the 1982-86/87 group, although there were a few exceptions, especially in the "Viper" ranks.

I can't speak much on the value of the story quality given that I haven't watched many episodes, but can surely say that the art of the animation took a nosedive. But to be fair, only the first 2 initial mini-series' owned quality art and animation, alongside the Cobra-La movie.
Not to mention the sad loss and variation of the voices of carried over characters from earlier years. |

As a kid, I "borrowed" from the comic, cartoon and file cards, but my head-canon was the only real canon. There weren't "rules" to follow, like playing Star Wars. It's a fun way to play, so when the cartoon, comic, movies etc eventually jump the shark, nothing is tainted.
Firefly still isn't a ninja to me, even though I love Hama's comic, and there are no "Fred" characters, just Cobra Commander. Hard to explain, but as a kid you get to make the rules. I'm past the age where new stuff can taint my old memories. Yoda flipping around in AOTC made me realize I don't have any creative control over this stuff, so when an awful Predator or MCU movie comes out, or Marvel puts out an awful comic, or a new Street Fighter came doesn't live up to what I expected, I just shrug it off. Gotta grow up eventually, I guess. |
