Israel uses the Iron Beam laser system, which is a double-digit kW laser which exceeds 4 miles range with destructive power, but has perfect accuracy even at 6 miles range.
But the range of what G.I. Joe or the real United States military uses... I have no idea, and if I did know, I wouldn't be able to tell anyone because it is classified.

The hal elevation ability seems to imply a purpose of anti aircraft or incoming missiles etc, but the term artillery usually means to bombard land targets. Is there anywhere (blueprints, box, comics, etc) that verifies its anti aircraft? I guess it could elevate up to hit mountains or cliffs.

From 90’s era ABLs to recent Stryker mounted LWS, we’ve been experimenting with the tech for decades. Most of it however is defensive but now with Lockheed’s 300kw HELSI for indirect fires, we’re hopefully transitioning to an offensive capability

Decal 14 which is placed on the CRT Sighting and Locating Computer Display would indicate to children that their HAL is presently targeting an aircraft for destruction.

Another high energy laser employed by the G.I. Joe team worth mentioning is the 1986 L.A.W. (Laser Artillery Weapon), which was also ahead of its time.
Last year, the U.S. Army began installing the first of a very similar Raytheon built 50 kW laser on their Stryker combat vehicles as an excellent defense against drones. They are trying to make it effective against rockets, artillery, and mortar attacks. While the G.I. Joe L.A.W. was intended as a stationary area short range defense system, it is no less effective against thwarting COBRA attacks.

No, artillery would be any large-caliber guns used in warfare when they are fired from the land at anything else on land, sea, or air. The word comes from the Old French word artillier meaning to equip or arm. Because the HAL is a land based 1,000 kW laser cannon that can destroy objects on the ground, water surface, or in the air, it can easily qualify as artillery.

Totally forgot about that HAL sticker, I literally haven't held or seen one since probably 3rd grade lol. Once the line really took off, I didn't play with it much anymore, and was into the Whirlwind and ASP, but now I think the HAL is badass and I'd love a Cobra-fied version!

In another thread discussing the 1987 Persuader vehicle, I was mentioning that self-propelled G.I. Joe vehicle had a high-powered laser cannon on the movable turret used for armor piercing purposes.
The blueprints described this as a 10 megawatt laser cannon, which means that it could possibly be up to 10 times the range and destructive power of the H.A.L. laser cannon. With such power, it would reduce any armored vehicle to ash, and would even vaporize a vehicle with a chromed mirrored protective surface such as the Canadian convention Cobra H.A.T.E. Tank.
