TESTIFY MY BROTHER!!!
My ex hated the fact that I collected GI Joes. I began the night our son was born, stopping by TRU to buy a Tonka Dump Truck.Never made it past the action figure aisle. This was in 1988... I continued collecting until the end of the GIJCC FSS line. Now I am selling off that massive collection and collecting the Classified series. I also collected and maintained my Sigma 6 collection. This is all rooted in nostalgia. I was born in 1963, I am a 12" Joe kid (especially Adventure Team). My new wife is supportive, because she respects and cares about me. If it makes me happy.... then DO IT. Don't let others judge you. Be true to your self. Enjoy your toys, no matter how big or small. I got back into collecting Joes in 2010, so I could look back in hindsight on the 25th Anniversary and pick up what I thought was the best, and ignore the rest. With POC and 30th I got caught up in chasing "the lastest thing", and eventually had to brace myself and realize, I was caught up in the mania of the moment. Sometimes its beneficial to arrive late, after the fact.

I'm kind of embarrassed but I remember in 2018 I was working this job for the county that wasn't just difficult but was troubling to my OCD which grew steadily worse, one of the ways I coped was to pick up different Jurassic dinos once or twice each week either online or in stores to pass the time because it distracted me

my wife pretty much has contempt for anything im interested in. all the while, watching hours of youtube tea spilling videos of influencers and other drama from nobodies she'll never meet. she was cool with my costuming hobby at the beginning of our relationship, but she's not as interested in it as she was. which is fine.
at first i thought i would want someone that is interested in gijoes with me and i had that 20 years ago. turns out, i gave all my cool shit to that airhead when we broke up. no doubt in my mind that she doesnt appreciate it now if she even still has it. do your thing, it's your hobby. not your significant other's. the problem i'm dealing with now is i think im finally aging out of buying toys. there's the rare thing that interests me anymore. they're too expensive for what you get, and in my case it's kept in three places waiting to be opened, messed around with for a bit, and then tossed in a rubbermaid drawer thing. i hate it. not only that, i cant just sell it, becuase what i put into collecting the stuff i'd want to sell - it'd rot everywhere it's for sale and i'd never make my money back on it. and then what good is that money? pay a bill? im already doing that with the less money im spending on toys right now. buy more shit to replace that shit? it sucks. My wife supported me when I started. She was also into collecting (Barbies) and had no issue. That lasted for six months. After that, she has told me it was time to move on and whatever, and every now and then has something negative to say about my toys. We reached an agreement and so I keep collecting at snail pace.
One thing my wife had to say for my toys is that they are not well organized or displayed. That's entirely reasonable and something I need to do, put in a couple of hundreds to buy shelving and install it and properly organize my collection. I also should get rid of things I don't need anymore or bought for some reason but there's no reason any more. We used to go thrift-shopping and I found many Chap Mei vehicles, some really cool, (I even found one of those C-130 almost complete for $3) while I got others that were entirely unnecessary. However, I debate: should I keep them for future customs, or not? |

Other than my wife I don't give a damn what anyone thinks of me. As long as the mortgage gets paid there's no arguments as to how the rest of the money gets spent.
Than being said I like my dog more than I like my collection and with 40 staring me in the face I'm attempting to slow down a bit. Last edited by cjflan33; 06-12-2023 at 11:04 AM.. |

Have a separate account / card for collecting, and ship everything to your work. Makes things much easier. As long as the bills are getting paid on time and I take her out to eat on the weekend or take us to see the new movie, she doesn't complain when she walks into my man-cave and sees a new AT-ST or MOTU Origins figure sitting there.

They can be poisonous if you don't cook them right?

Overall, I would say people that know me are supportive. Sometimes non-collector people will text me photos of the figures they see when they are out at stores and ask me if I need any of them. I am flattered that people think of me when they spot JOEs (or MOTU).

Yeah like that's not a very common saying if it even is one
