Zarana is the strongest of the female sculpts IMO. Even bought a second figure just to use her head for Lady Jaye. (They're the same character in my head-canon.) In terms of updating an original without abandoning her original design, she is superior to many attempts. I prefer her Classified look to Zartan, even.

But even then, you have the split of collectors who left in 86-87 and those who joined then, leaving a decisive split between those who only want "realistic" and those who are fine with more "modern" EIGHTIES designs.
The guys who left in 86 with his Scarlett being jumpsuit and the guy who joined in 86 with later his Scarlett being Ninja Force is vastly different. |

I want to recognize the character, but I also want it to look like they come from the modern day and not the 80s

I like future tech and sensible/practical color schemes. A design like Quick-Kick, Outback, and even the gem that is Scarlett are not and were not then practical. Half of the characters look like combat fodder. No vests, no helmets, a stealth combat unit dressed in neon and sports jerseys, etc. A figure can be modernized and still obviously be the same character. Change for no reason than to be different bores me.

I feel like I'm in-between option 1 and 2. I don't want straight ARAH recreations, but I also don't want too many deviations from the original designs. Like the Cobra Island Firefly was too much for me and I didn't care for him at all since he went too far and drifted away from his original design and look. I feel like figures like Major Bludd, Destro, Serpentor, the Viper, Lady Jaye, Baroness, Zarana or Scrap-Iron; where they are based on their classic designs, but then given some tweaks here and there to update them are what I tend to enjoy the most.
I would rather have ARAH recreations over a figure that drastically changes the original look or design though. Like I'll take Dusty over the #06 Cobra Commander. It just depends I guess. |

I think there is a place for both. The "retro" series 0-ring releases should have been straight up ARAH designs with packaging. It would have been nice to include some never before done figures like a General Flagg and Arctic Kwinn that were never done in the ARAH era.
As for Classified, I would prefer modern updates to the classic characters. At minimum, actual accessories and gear that were molded on the ARAH designs. Stuff like the molded knife on Lt. Falcon's web gear was unacceptable, it should have been a removable knife or just don't put it there and let us customize our own. They could save the straight ARAH designs for retro card back releases.
