Just realized that the "new sculpt" GI Joe vs Cobra line debuted 21 years ago, 20 years after the launch of ARAH. In other words, the new sculpt era is now older than ARAH was when the new sculpt era began.
(Editorial aside: this was the shittiest batch of figures Hasbro ever stuck the GI Joe logo on, a god awful line-up that kicked off five years of desperately flailing and erratic brand management, endlessly throwing out crappy new sculpts alongside rafts of ARAH repaints with wildly varying degrees of quality/desirability.)

Which is how us grumpy old farts prefer it, goddamn it! This format really facilitates bitching.

I got two points on that edition. Never had an AOL email account(it was Juno-though I did use the dialup) or a Myspace page(never into social media). Everything else, yep.

Love where this little thread has gone! Nothing much to add besides the following:
1) My score is a big fat, very old 0. 2) As others have pointed out, the nu-sculpt era was headed in a good direction with the final new releases and DTC figures. 3) The 25th live was an extremely mixed bag. On the one hand, those fucking Duke arms were the shitty gift that kept on shitting, on the other hand, Paraviper, Airborne, Torpedo, Snow Serpent... . More to the point, it was a line that, while definitely overly reverential to the classic designs in many cases (and frustratingly not so in others) felt cohesive in a way nu-sculpt Joes never quite did. Within the first year of the nu sculpt era, you had figures that felt like they belonged to entirely different toy lines (Baroness v4 is a whole shitty line unto herself). And that's just talking about the mew sculpts, ignoring the fact that these wildly variable new designs were being released alongside re-deco'd (and oddly orange-skinned) ARAH figures. It was like 1982, 1989, and GI Joe Extreme figures all hanging on the same racks. 4) Sigma 6 was awesome. Two lines distinguished by scale, but sharing a single design aesthetic, building on past designs, while confidently establishing its own distinctive style. Like nu sculpt Joes, proportions were exaggerated, but the exaggerations reflected a singular and consistent vision, as opposed to the nu sculpt era's seemingly random proportional/stylistic mutations. Also, accessory assignment was thoughtful and character specific, whereas nu sculpt Joes were generally assigned accessories 90s style--at random and sometimes with big plastic tabs hanging off the side to facilitate some stupid gimmick.

If you can ever find the blue Night Creeper from this era with his accessories, I recommend him.
You know how awful that gangly Night Creeper with the bad aesthetics is? The blue one is the original and he's great when all geared up. He's a Scuba Creeper. Once he has his tanks and helmet on, that weird design suddenly makes sense. And if he is swimming with his fins on, his legs don't seem as long anymore. Plus I think his only weapon is a sword and scabbard, which is cool. All the other color variants of this figure are terrible, but it is because they are reusing an aquatic figure without his accessories. Imagine if Viper was just an Eel without his gear and with a bunch of swords and guns.

More than that, one of the Sunbow storyboard artists said they were actively watching Anime rented from LA video shops and used the anime story telling techniques in their boards. I think he mentioned the Air Strikers shadows on the the ground in the first episode as an example of this. I believe this interview is in an a Joeburg episode at some point.

I picked up the kitchen trashcan yesterday and now my back is borked. It feels like the muscle detached from the top of my back but pain is in my mid back.
It wasn't even heavy, i didn't pick it up wrong. |
