Part of what I have always liked about Hama's writing is his sense of humor. He Managed to have a sense of humor even in the most dire moments.

Billy got treated pretty roughly in the IDW ARAH series (not that he wasn't in the Marvel one). It starts-off with him being controlled by Dr. Venom, then shortly after regaining control, he's killed by a Blue Ninja.

I think the fan you are thinking of is Fatherlove. He was a huge Scarlett fan and really felt like they were treating her with diservice.

I'm a big cheerleader for the second half of ARAH in general but I'd like to reread DDP. I voted for it.

Yeah, it might have been Fatherlove as he was a big Scarlett fan. I thought it was someone called RainbowSix or similar, but it's a while ago!

Jerwa's vision seemed more coherent than Blaylock's and he also added nice touches like Seitin (nod to Satan figure). It was a shame that the Red Shadow story seemed rushed. I did find the run fun at the time and less of a slog than some of Hama's IDW run.

Regardless of the writer, I prefer the stories where Scarlett is set apart from Snake-Eyes and Duke. Same with Lady Jaye and Flint, CG and Shipwreck, Jinx and the ninja. These women were the best at what they did, but seldom got to rise above their male counterparts. It would've been nice, too, if one publisher focused on totally different characters in the Joeverse; more like Justice League Unlimited rotating characters but keeping a few core members around for each adventure. And, in LH's defense, after four decades, he probably ran out of stories that he really wanted to tell or couldn't tell those stories.

Great storytellers only really have one great story in them, that they find ways to retell with a few modifications.
