How old do you think the Joe/Cobra/Dreadnok characters are? Not based on real world time, so no 90 year old Joes lol.
I'll start with my favorites: Zartan: 40s Zarana & Zandar: 30 Zanya: 18

Going by rank:
GI Joe has a lot of E-5s, which I would say range from 24-34. Stalker, Scarlett, and Snake Eyes (when they were E-5s) I'd place 27-32. Steeler (O-1) is 23-25, since he commissioned ROTC and O-1s rank up almost automatically after 2 years. Duke (E-8) is 35-40. Old enough to be a father figure, as most First Shirts are, but young enough to hang with the young 'uns. With a little help from Motrin. Hawk commissioned West Point at 22 or 23 and has gone up the ranks. 2 years for O-1, 2-3 for O-2, at least 2 for O-3 (I've known Captains who had the rank close to a decade, but Hawk is an exceptional individual). I'd say he's around 40-45 as an O-6, ready to promote to O-7. |

In the original ARAH timeline/filecards? I would say most characters on the Joe team depending on rank probably were ages 25-35. Duke was probably around 40 and Hawk was probably closer to 45. I think Stalker, Snake Eyes and Scarlett were probably 35-40. The bad guys were probably much more varied. I think Cobra Commander was probably around 35-45, Destro was probably over 40. Zartan was probably 30-35 as were most of the Dreadnoks too. Baroness was probably 30-35. Firefly was probably 30-40. I guess Storm Shadow was also probably at least 30 and probably closer to 35.

In the original stuff I always assumed the youngest Joe was Scarlett and the youngest Cobra was Baroness, with both being in their 20s while everyone else was 30 minimum and most being established or vets were probably 40+.

If the books are sticking to military rules, then ranks ought to determine their ages not time. I don't consider the ages of comic book characters or animated characters, but I did get agitated when DC de-aged (and de-handicapped) Barbara Gordon, undoing the lore of Oracle; arguably the smartest character in the Batman world. Clearly we all obsess over different details and the nurses at the assisted living facilities where the '80s kids end up will be sick and tired of these obsession-based arguments someday.

I think the Vietnam War is too integral to the characters to retcon that away, the same as Frank Castle.
I go by Larry's books and file cards as canon, so the whole story takes place in the 80s in my mind. Obviously I don't consider anything after the original run as "canon" cause there's no way these guys are still running around in their 70s. I figure Snake Eyes was born around '48 or so. 20 years old coming home from Nam in '68. Stalker is a few years older and Tommy is a few years younger. Still puts him at mid to late 30s for his "prime" in RAH, but that's what Larry wrote. If any of the original characters are still alive today, they'd be in their late 70s or 80s. (I don't consider anything Sunbow to be canon at all, cause it's completely ludicrous, but assuming Cobra Commander was 25 around the time of Vietnam, he'd be 63 years old when he appears as Old Snake in 2006. It's funny how "old" we thought 63 was back in the 80s. Now you look at a guy who's 63 and you think he's still got a lot of life left in him. Back then that was considered OLLLLDDD.) |

Has anyone tried to use the original file card ranks to determine all the characters ages ever?
