I think the Vietnam War is too integral to the characters to retcon that away, the same as Frank Castle.
I go by Larry's books and file cards as canon, so the whole story takes place in the 80s in my mind. Obviously I don't consider anything after the original run as "canon" cause there's no way these guys are still running around in their 70s. I figure Snake Eyes was born around '48 or so. 20 years old coming home from Nam in '68. Stalker is a few years older and Tommy is a few years younger. Still puts him at mid to late 30s for his "prime" in RAH, but that's what Larry wrote. If any of the original characters are still alive today, they'd be in their late 70s or 80s. (I don't consider anything Sunbow to be canon at all, cause it's completely ludicrous, but assuming Cobra Commander was 25 around the time of Vietnam, he'd be 63 years old when he appears as Old Snake in 2006. It's funny how "old" we thought 63 was back in the 80s. Now you look at a guy who's 63 and you think he's still got a lot of life left in him. Back then that was considered OLLLLDDD.) |

Duke's said to be a Green Beret who was in Nam in the earliest stages of that war, putting him into his mid 20s by about 1965 given how long he'd need to be a regular infantry grunt before going SF. That puts him into his mid 40s by 1985 and pushing 55 by the time ARAH ended in 1994.
Repeater is said on his filecard to be one of the older Joes, so I'd put him around 45 too. Most of the others were probably talking between 30 and 35. Especially since some Joes are in the military after a prior civilian career like Spearhead's time in insurance. |

I thought Mainframe was one of the oldest as well, but his filecard says he enlisted at 17 just in time for the last year of the war, which was 1975. So assuming he was 17 in 1975, that would make him 28 years old when his figure is released in 1986.
I just think RAH can't be divorced from the 1980s. It just doesn't work. Snake Eyes carried an uzi. That's a really outdated and impractical weapon for a US soldier to carry, but it's a product of its time. The Pursuit of Cobra figures were a fantastic way of re-imagining these characters with more modern aesthetics. Since Classified has changed directions to essentially be bigger versions of the 1980s figures, I still consider them 1980s characters. As for the comments from the "canon" police....hey, if you like that absolutely insipid cartoon show as you personal canon, knock yourself out. I couldn't watch that slop even as a kid. I prefer the stories that were crafted by the Vietnam vet himself, not a bunch of coked up kids' show writers. Last edited by Otomo; 03-02-2023 at 05:48 PM.. |

I met Buzz Dixon at a Con once and he seemed like the kind of guy who would drink the same amount of Coke as anybody else.

Classified's first waves of modern "what-ifs" no longer exist so you're right in that the line is just 1/12 Joes of RAH. |

I've wondered if the Joes ever showed up somewhere on their downtime but were embarrassed one of their friends was carrying ninja swords, think of the cringe.
That's why in my universe I prefer v1 SE, he's only the ninja when in Japan taking on his enemies. |

For some you can read their original file cards for clues. Duke's for example said he enlisted in 1967. Assuming he was 18 at the time would make him 34 years old by the time his figure's debut in 1983. Today he'd be 74 years old, but fictional characters don't age. For the past 40 years Duke keeps having birthday parties the makes him one step closer to 40.
Between file cards and the original Marvel run you can guestimate their ages. Some mention historical events. It tells you their grades. You can research online the average years of service it takes to reach them. File cards also tells you if they've got college degrees. |
