But if I had to put a definitive end to that relatively innocent childhood it would be when we all started to get girlfriends. Toys had to go by that stage but you could still play sports and video games. Then cars came and it was mostly movies, restaurant hangouts, bars and house parties.

I would have rode in that down the block to work if I could have fit my 40 year old ass in it! |

Talking about being kids and toys, did any of you guys go back and forth on your favorite toyline as a kid too? I remember I would go through phases where I would be super into MASK for like 6 months and then get back into GI Joe for a year and then cycle back to MOTU or MASK again. I did it a lot at one point. As I got older though, say age 9 or 10 I tended to stick with what I liked for longer. But ages 3-7, I would be into a different toy line every 4 or 5 months.
I know 1986 was a big year for Joe, but that happened to be the year Real Ghostbusters and MASK blew up big and I hardly had any Joe figs from '86 because I lost interest (I only had Zandar, Zarana, Monkeywrench and the B.A.T. from '86). But then I got back into Joe full swing in '87 and '88 and had most of the single figures from those years in my collection.

Not entitlement, just a hopeful anticipation of what we'd like to see and impossible to match expectations. Without that, I don't think the quality would have improved as much as it has. Anthony's Customs may come off as a bit of a grouch, but pointed critiques like his help advance the standards... at least for those who pay attention over at these major and not so major companies. As kids we just indiscriminately looked for whatever hit the shelves and thought is was various shades of cool.

Nah, you're looking at them as adult collectibles and not toys. The toys we played with as kids were toys, and they were engaging and fun for kids. What pushed toy "innovation" forward for a long time were simple market forces: if something didn't attract children's attention and/or keep them engaged and interested, it didn't sell. Now action figures are a collectible for a subset of adults, and we nit-pick, bitch and push for "better"...while we buy them anyway. The attitude seems to be, "I'm buying this so make it be what I want it to be!" The old model worked better. If you don't like something, why you buying it? But anyway, somewhere along the way, we forgot what toys actually are and replaced that with what our adult selves want them to be.

I pretty well did the same thing, transitioning (back) into SW and focusing more attention on Marvel comics and Nintendo.

I can remember one Christmas during Turtle-mania that I altered my wish list like 15 times, going back and forth between being Joe or TMNT heavy. Must have been annoying as fuck for my family, and ultimately, Joe won out (although there was a pretty even split under the tree).
