Maybe I was too young ('82), but was Joe as big as TMNT in the early 90s? My childhood first remembrance of HUGE was TMNT. I remember how much of a nightmare it was to find the four Turtles themselves, Foot SOldiers weren't easy to get, and April was like nonexistent and only available at toy shows for $100+.
I was born in late '78 so I got to experience the end of the SW run as king, GI Joe's dominance as well as TMNT's right before I hit my teenage years in the early '90s.

The funny thing is we had video games back then too. My family got an Atari 2600 in 1981, an NES in 1987 and a Genesis in 1990 and we played those things to death. All my friends did at the time. But at the same time, we all still wanted to go outside and ride bikes, skateboard, play, get into trouble like kids do and stuff too. It was a healthy dose of playing outside, playing with tons of toys, playing sports and playing video games. Plus finding time to watch our favorite cartoons as well!

My lord, it's been THAT long since OG MMPR came out? I keep forgetting it was technically a childhood thing in the early 90s, but I never got into it for some odd reason.
Death of Joe in '94 led oddly straight to Star Wars for me. |

Video games were a novelty at first that boomed, crashed and then roared back. Early video games sucked too. I mean, they were fun at the time, but very few of them made you want to play them repeatedly. NES changed that, and it was just a huge leap from pre-crash games. NES started the change to kids wanting to playing games at every opportunity, sitting around getting fat. I actually remember noticing the change, especially with my little brother and his friends in the late eighties through the nineties.
Bought a collection on the Game Cube a few years back and man, it's just not the same trying to play Intellivision games on a modern controller. |

Atari games did suck lol But we still loved them to death back then! I remember playing the hell out of Pitfall, Ms. Pac-Man and Donkey Kong back then. The first game that really immersed me and my friends though was the Legend of Zelda on the NES. We drew maps and shared tips and everything.
My cousin had the Intellivision! I remember thinking how weird it was having that big controller thingamajig lol It was fun though! Talking about riding bikes outside, I remember summer '86 when Top Gun came out, my best friend and I would ride bikes and pretend to dogfight like we were in jets that entire summer. Good times!

I'm old enough to remember needing to play within earshot of my house so I could hear my mom calling me in for dinner. Quote:

I remember one time my dad found a few pegs of the OG April and the orange stripe variant and I'm guessing a V3 one (she had wavy permed hair) at like Discount Harry's, and bought them all up figuring they'd be a good investment for college for me. I still have a box of those damn things I can't sell for $10! About 10 years ago I sold all my mint packaged TMNT for about $5 each. And you got robbed selling them that low! Quote:
I think part of the reason for adult collector "entitlement" is due to how huge GIJoe was back then. With every new iteration that's come along since, we've seen adult collectors seem to automatically expect a "full line" with numerous vehicles and playsets and wave upon wave of figures. It's like we just don't understand times have changed.

Favorite thing was those battery powered vehicles you'd ride as kids. I had a Big Foot if I recall and that slow thing would be chasing my cousin in her Barbie car down the driveway every day.

I saw a Luke's Landspeeder Power Wheel at TRU when they were closing down 4 yrs ago. I was sooooo tempted to buy it! I could barely sit in it though lol "At some point in your childhood, you and your friends went outside to play together for the last time and nobody knew it." Yeah, I sometimes will reminisce and try to think the last time I played with all my friends and was still innocent and carefree. Probably around when I was 13 or ready to turn 14. Wish I could go back in time.
