I remember all of this and agree with what everyone has said. However, objectively speaking, Transformers were just as ubiquitous, if not more, between 1984 and 1988.

According to Kirk Bozigian, Transformers generated more revenue for Hasbro than G.I. Joe did, however the latter was more profitable, ie., it made more money than it cost to make.

i said pretty much everywhere here that my main custom fodder is o-ring construction. when i look for anything to buy i'm looking for how it works with o-ring gijoes.
i'll be 40 this year, but collecting gijoe since 88, and it's always going to be my main anything. im literally taking apart a mattel buzz lightyear to cram a 3d printed o-ring head and upper torso into it. im this committed to the style that i'll shove it into a thing it's not even meant to. my gijoe collection isnt a healthy one. i'm trying to collect and complete with filecard 1987-1990, but that waxes into 1991 some - but i have all the modern o-ring retail releases (in armies, or singles) and then some more vintage "have to have" figures complete. then just a mix of whatever. it's ridiculous, but if i were to point to something that's the real collection i'd point to the 87-90 stuff. outside of that i have a gigantic amount of custom figures. one of these days i should sit down and count them all. Transformers were harder to collect for the average kid, still incredible though. Definitely more of an all-in-one toy category.
With the Joes you had so many options; you could focus on the figures, upgrade with vehicles and get super lucky with the occasional playset. They all enhanced each other but could perfectly fill that Joe niche on their owm. Plus, because they were so much more affordable, lots of other kids had them too so you could really see a huge swath of what the line had to offer. A friend of mine down the street had the Flagg set up in his family garage and once I got the Defiant for my birthday one year it was on! It's too bad video games have all but taken up that entire play dynamic between kids. Sure, Fortnite and other franchises have gone on to provide a little action figure boom but it's totally different today.

In my "group", G.I. Joe was pretty much king by 1984. Star Wars was on the way out, at least until the 90's. We didn't play much Transformers, MOTU or Thundercats. Watched the cartoons and stuff but when we got together, it was Joe time.
A few of us followed the Marvel comic so we added that to our "playing canon". Of course, San Antonio is a big military town, so most of our parents were either active or veterans, or someone in the family was. |

as much as it bugs me reading that video games takes up kid's focus from toys - my 5 year old hasnt touched a video game system really yet (except to play tmnt with me for a bit) but his entire focus is tv. it doesnt even matter what he's watching either, just that it's on.
and his imaginext collection is obscene. he's going to age out before he even gets it all. he rarely plays with it and if he does it's small pockets of mixed figures and stuff with smash and crash play. makes me sad. we dont really expose him to tablets, video games on his own, and stuff, so it's like there's something just in kids' brains now that they're hardly interested in toys. |

I think part of the reason for adult collector "entitlement" is due to how huge GIJoe was back then. With every new iteration that's come along since, we've seen adult collectors seem to automatically expect a "full line" with numerous vehicles and playsets and wave upon wave of figures. It's like we just don't understand times have changed.

The funny thing is we had video games back then too. My family got an Atari 2600 in 1981, an NES in 1987 and a Genesis in 1990 and we played those things to death. All my friends did at the time. But at the same time, we all still wanted to go outside and ride bikes, skateboard, play, get into trouble like kids do and stuff too. It was a healthy dose of playing outside, playing with tons of toys, playing sports and playing video games. Plus finding time to watch our favorite cartoons as well!
Growing up, my fav toys (in order of impact and importance to me at the time) would be Star Wars and GI Joe tied for 1st and then closely followed by M.A.S.K., He-Man, TMNT, Transformers, Go-Bots, Hot Wheels & Matchbox, and the REAL Ghostbusters. Quote:

Maybe I was too young ('82), but was Joe as big as TMNT in the early 90s? My childhood first remembrance of HUGE was TMNT. I remember how much of a nightmare it was to find the four Turtles themselves, Foot SOldiers weren't easy to get, and April was like nonexistent and only available at toy shows for $100+.
I remember one time my dad found a few pegs of the OG April and the orange stripe variant and I'm guessing a V3 one (she had wavy permed hair) at like Discount Harry's, and bought them all up figuring they'd be a good investment for college for me. I still have a box of those damn things I can't sell for $10! About 10 years ago I sold all my mint packaged TMNT for about $5 each. |
