I thought this could be interesting. Aside from being slightly obsessed with him and owning over 60 figures and currently constructing a cabinet devoted solely to Cobra's founding father, I've always been fascinated by how radically different Cobra Commander was interpreted across the Joe Multiverse.
We've got Hama's, of course. I really thought about doing "Pre Death" and "Post Death" since the character does seem a bit more unhinged after his return, but, honestly, I think alot of the early, more controlled and scheming CC was a thing of the past long before that. Plus, I've got enough options as it is. Devil's Due - Had to include this version. It jumps off of Hama's, but plays with the origin a bit. CC and Snake Eyes running around as a vigilante duo? Yes sir. I want a whole comic book series of their adventures together. Plus, Devil's Due CC was a bad sumbitch. I also thought his character was tied up very, very nicely when that series ended. IDW - I'm specifically referring to the whole "Cobra Commander is a title passed down from one guy to the next" idea from the...I guess the "main" title? (sorry if I'm mistaken there). I really enjoyed the comic that went back and showed the various CCs across the decades. Cool idea not making him a singular character. Cartoon - This is another one that I could have divided up. Sunbow Season 1 CC is my dude, and I think he's fun trying to sneak around and overthrow Serpentor in the second season, but the Cobra-La reveal kinda spoiled my day. Still, though, you gotta take the good with the bad when it comes to Cartoon CC. His DIC incarnation probably could have been a separate choice, but, honestly, who is going to pick that one other than me? Resolute - What a novel way to repproach the character - especially for those who were only familiar with his cartoon portrayal. I remember seeing his big speech for the first time and being absolutely giddy with joy. Renegades - If it wasn't for Devil's Due CC being so cool, I'd pick this one. Love the way they reinterpret Cobra, and love seeing a CC fully in control of his organization. Live Action - Well, it happened. It wasn't so bad in the second movie. Filecard - He seems unique enough to merit his own option. Filecard CC seems a bit more straightforward terrorist/criminal kingpin without the fun dramatics of the other versions.

I'm only familiar with the cartoon, live action film, and Hamaverse/toys, so of those three, I choose Hama (although, when I read CC's dialogue, it's always in Chris Latta's voice).

Never going to be able to shake that, but not really sure I want to. Still wish he could have been around for Resolute and Renegades. He had an awesome, more sinister/less screechy, CC voice that he'd break out occasionally that would have worked perfectly.

It's hard for me to vote against the cartoon one. Latta's voice, being a coward with one goofy scheme after another, the iconic "Cobra...RETREAT!" all the time. He's the most memorable and therefore my favorite. Hate the DIC one all you want but him coming back and overthrowing Serpentor was a great moment.
I'd give it to Hama's if we were just talking pre-death but alas, you have to take the entire package. Post death he just became the cartoon version, only more 90s over the top violent and without the cowardly traits. Fighting Snake-Eyes one on one like it was a frigging 80s action movie in the end was the last straw. |

As someone new to the lore, the live action version made the most sense to me. An abandoned army vet who is bitter at the world makes so much more sense than a used car salesman or a snake person.

Got to vote for the Sunbow one, Latta's Commander was one of the greatest cartoon villains of the 80s. His voice is the one I hear in my head while reading the comics.

Sort of a Blofeld/Largo/Goldfinger combo with a bit of Max Zorin thrown in for panache. And under his mask he looks like Zorin too. |
