When 6-year old me read that Wild Weasel cut his teeth in bus wars, I took it literally. I thought he was the toughest guy imaginable. This guy cuts his teeth, wow!

That's an excellent point and is probably intentionally worded that way to avoid any military connection.
I know next to nothing about the Classified figures, so that makes me wonder, do any of the Joes in that product line have any mention of the military on their packaging, or are they all treated as civilians now?

That is news to me, unless by that you mean that they have the written abbreviation for the word Sergeant or Major before their code names.
I was hoping to discover something more substantive than that, because wearing a beret does not mean military service, and neither does the SGT abbreviation placed before a name. Even a civilian international charitable organization such as The Salvation Army has sergeants. During my ten years with the Dallas Police Department, we had Senior Corporals, Sergeants, Lieutenants, and Captains, and many of them had never served in the military. They even added the rank of Major after I had left! Fire departments also have ranks such as Lieutenants and Captains. So, might there be something in the Classified product line that would decidedly affiliate the Joes with the military?

G.I. actually meant galvanized iron, but later came to be thought of as general issue or government issue, and would become a slang term used to describe any man in the U.S. armed forces.
In 1964 the team at Hasbro didn't know what they were going to call the brand, so they used G.I. Joe as a placeholder, taken from the 1945 American war film called The Story of G.I. Joe, until they could come up with a better name for the toys. But they never did for the United States versions of the product, and the name stuck.

As a kid the file cards basically gave me an inferiority complex. Every Joe was some genius level intellect who spoke a bazillion languages and was proficient in like every damn weapon imaginable and had a ton of other skills...while being like fresh out of college it looked (since many looked young).
Yes, I get they were the best of the best but it made it hard as a kid to self insert myself into their adventures. I wound up loving guys like Bazooka who was dumb as rocks in the cartoon. Some of the bios on the website are sometimes laughably bad. Scarlett memorized law dictionaries so she could be an on the spot lawyer I guess? The hell? Some of the new bios are pretty cool, though. Baroness only being concerned with watching the world burn sounds awesome and a great expansion of her evil after years of her and Destro basically being semi-good guys in the comics. |
