The worst part about that scene, is just before she removes her helmet, you see the MALE stunt double in the Taskmaster outfit and the physical difference between him and Olga Kurylenko was ridiculously obvious. Leaving Taskmaster as a dude with no connection to the story, a character with no background that appears out of nowhere, will just make the story worse.
If they were planning on using this character in future movies then keeping some unanswered questions about Taskmaster would have a value. For a one-time character, giving Taskmaster a backstory was the right call.

They wouldn't have left the story exactly the same, if they had gone with the more faithful to the comics Taskmaster. They could easily have jettisoned the whole "Dreykov's daughter still being alive" plot point and just had Taskmaster be the Red Room's main trainer.

That is exactly my point. Taskmaster as the Red Room's main trainer with no background makes a worse story. Just look at Death Dealer - a boring character with no backstory that adds nothing to the movie.

I still think OT Fangbele was supposed to be Taskmaster and they changed it. He got top billing for his bit part in the movie, and when he was talking when he first got hired it sounded like he was trying out for an action part.

I'm guessing they made Taskmaster female later to give Widow/Yelena a female opponent.

It's gonna look so odd in the new Thunderbolts movie with a clear dude playing Taskmaster until the inevitable scenes where he takes his helmet off 20x and it's a tiny female head with a giant ass suit around her.
