GI Joe to me was always working under the Pentagon doing what even the CIA and Delta force deemed too dangerous.

That's interesting, because I liked Duke's file card dossier, but mostly disliked his cartoon personality, which failed to live up to his comic book one.
Maybe you already know this, while others might not, that Larry Hama would type on a manual typewriter a couple of pages of notes for each character. It was Kirk Bozigian that wanted to use some of the information to give the copywriter something to print on the backs of the toys, giving us what we know today as the file cards. I still have a copy of Larry Hama's notes for Duke that he wrote before the file card was created. This is what he typed February 1983 and included notes for Hasbro if they were unwilling to go to print with Duke as a Top Sergeant/Master Sergeant/First Sergeant, because Hasbro stated that they wanted him to be an officer: Hauser came from a bi-lingual home and was fluent in French and German at the time of his enlistment in 1960. He graduated Airborne School at Ft. Benning top of class and opted for the US Army Special Language School where he specialized in Han Chinese and Southeast Asian dialects. Went Special Forces in 1963 and did his first tour in the Republic of South Vietnam at the end of that year. First tour in the boonies working with Montagnard tribesmen of the central highlands. Subsequent tours with HHC MACV SOG (Headquarters Headquarters Company, Military Assistance Command Vietnam, Studies and Observation Group). Current assignment: Acting First Sergeant, G.I. Joe Team. Duke's the old vet. Did three tours 'In Country' and ran four different Special Forces schools. Turned down a commission in 1964. Has a tendency to become "one of the boys" and commands by winning respect. Excerpt from his statement declining his commission: "They tell me an officer's job is to impel others to take the risks in order that the officer survives to take the blame in the event of a total catastrophe. With all due respect for your rank, sir... If that's what an officer does, I don't want any part of it." I made Duke a top sergeant, because that's the one slot glaringly missing from the roster. I thought about him being an officer but at his age he would have to at least be a major and it's unheard of for a unit as small as the Joes to have two Staff-grade officers. Also, it's a bit tacky for a much older Major to be serving under such a young Colonel. But, if he must be an officer... (a probability that is probably already concrete -- I have bitten the bullet in advance and prepared these inserts). 1. Current grade: Major. 2. Battlefield commission in 1967. Captured by the NVA in 1969. Escaped six months later. Ran Special Ops School at Langley. Advisory commission on Special Warfare. Chairman, Combined Anti-Terrorist Neutralization Unit. 3. "I don't believe in gadgets. I believe in the infantry. They can throw all that high-tech hardware at each other 'til the sun don't shine no more but the battle isn't won until a walking, breathing, rifle-toting infantryman plants his mud-soaked size-ten combat boots on the other side's turf and claims it with his blood, sweat and all the ammo he can carry." I had seen this before, and I always wondered what he was saying here about the age of Hawk (I am Yoda-speaking to avoid using apostrophes). He obviously had a sense of exactly how old Hawk was, but it never came across to me in the comics that he was young (or younger than Duke). Hawk was an officer by the end of ?Nam when Snake-Eyes returned home. Why would he be substantially younger than Duke?
We know that Hawk was at the rank of Colonel in 1982, which indicates he was probably West Point class of '60, '61, or '62. If Larry Hama were to change Duke into a Major and make him a younger XO teamed up with Hawk in 1983, he would have to significantly rewrite much of his bio for Duke.

My guess is that he was concerned about Duke, as the intended executive officer of the Joe team like Hasbro originally wanted, being too old to realistically be a Major, and preferred his intended story version of Duke serving as Acting First Sergeant.

it';s funny to see the notes and then realize how old the Joes must have been. Looking at them you'd think early-mid 20s but nowadays I look at minimum 35+ for most (probably some in their 20s like Scarlett the super genius who probably got through training quickly) with Duke and Flint being mid 40s and Hawk in his 50s.

I think most characters were around 25ish, or late 20s on the Joe team since most were E-4, which is usually someone around age 20-25 in the military. For Cobra I think the troops and grunts were all probably mid to late 20s or early 30s. The higher ranked Cobras were all probably late 30s or more likely 40 or even 45, like Cobra Commander, Destro, Baroness and Bludd. I would put Flint somewhere in the age of 25-30, leaning closer to 30. Duke was probably closer to 35ish. Hawk was probably 45ish.

Like Lady Jaye. No damn way she was this ridiculous master of languages and disguise at 20-25. |
