Cool mask/helmet is all that is needed.
There are uncool masks, like Ferret. His head is a fuel filter. |

Same. Every time I went into the toy section of a store in the mid to late 80s, I could be sure to find Zandar hanging in the G.I. Joe section. I was the only one of my group of friends who even had him.

What makes a character popular? Enough people need to find something about the character interesting, whether it's how they look, the popular culture at the time, their back story or stories written for them in various media.
I never really got the appeal of Shipwreck or the Dreadnoks, but some of that might be that we didn't have the cartoon on TV in the UK and I was more interested in the ninjas and soldiers than a biker gang. |

It would be interesting to know how well the Dreaknok figures sold on thos side of the Atlantic. I always remember Buzzer, Ripper and the rest peg warming. Shipwreck and Gung Ho v2 also stand out in my memory.

I always had Copperhead and Croc Master with the Dreadnoks. They all felt similar, and it made sense as Zartan's Cobra contacts he directly worked with.
I don't remember Joes pegwarming. But I mostly got store Joes in the 90s so Crystal Ball was gone by then. |

I always thought it was kinda funny that the Impel cards said Crystal Ball was from Cobra-La and gave him the same "sealed up forever!" fate they did the other Lavians.

That's what everyone here was saying when they showed us Copperhead's render, especially with his gun choices that he is likely out in the swamps by the Terrordrome with Croc-Master

Aye, I liked the Snake Eyes movie too! No shame in liking something even if it's popular not to.

To me, it was n3ver about the popularity of a single figure. I always liked GI Joe for the opposite reason. A huge number of characters. It seems like Hasbro was set on trying to devolve into a core character brand. But GI Joe isn't Batman. If it were, I wouldn't be interested even remotely. I want hundreds of unique individuals, both good and bad. I would honestly love to see them develop some new back story and create another faction or 2 that play both sides of the fence. Because the world isn't black or white, but a complex amalgamation of priorities that sometimes align, and other times are at odds.
