There's guys in the early 2000s who started their own club that met during JoeCon, even got recognized in the itinerary, their sole premise was to highlight crummy figures nobody liked, guess who their mascot was?

I actually like Zandar Crystal Ball and Raptor. I’ve said it before though. I distinctly remember Zander peg warning at Eckerd until 1992/93.

When Crystal Ball came out, holograms like his shield were all the rage. I blame it on those National Geographic covers. My dad had the eagle one and I stared at it all the time. Very cool and very 80's.
But even I don't like Raptor or Croc Master lol. I don't even like the Dreadnoks other than Zartan. But I wish Crystal Ball had been shown as a ruthless and efficient interrogator in the Marvel comic. I passed on him as a 7th grader, even though he peg-warmed literally everywhere, but once I started re-collecting around 2012, he was one of the first I purchased. Love that card art. |

I always felt Crystal Ball should have been used alongside the brainwave scanner to turn Joe's evil. He always felt like wasted potential.
I always put Croc Master with my Dreadnoks, it made sense that he would be supplying the Noks with Gators to defend their swamps. Gator wrestlers at gator farms were all over the swamps and marshes of the Gulf Coast in the 80s as tourist traps, so one being in Cobra made sense to an 80s kid from the Mississippi coast lol. I've always wondered if they hadn't been called Cobra La and had stayed on to a Sunbow made Season 3 or showed up in the comics if Golobulus, Nemesis Enforcer, and Pythona wouldn't have been more popular. The biotech look, the creepy monsters, that's stuff I loved in toys back then and would have loved more to put vs my Joes. Some of my favorite GI Joe episodes from the cartoon featured giant monsters. The movie had a ton of great designs too but man the Battlecry of Cobra Lalalala really hampered them. Raptor though, a man dressed as a Falcon on the battlefield with only a bird as his weapon. I could never figure out a way to make him cool. The old SNL sketch The Falconer is all I can think of nowadays when I see him. |

I have a confession. A lot of the things that turned me off on GI Joe as a kid have become the most interesting to me now. Cobra La and Crystal Ball were dumb concepts to me then. But now, if you want a "mature" concept for GI Joe, throw those guys in with a heavy Lovecraftian vibe and it could be astounding! Granted, it would not appeal to those who just want a realistic military concept, but I for one would find it very entertaining. Cobra La could be a modern "At the Mountains of Madness", or John Carpenter's "The Thing". Considering many of us felt Predator and Aliens were psuedo Joe movies from the 80's, call it Adventure Team 2.0.

G.I. Joe At the Mountains of Madness would make an amazing story.
I could also see Cobra trying to weaponize the Dunwhich Horror like they did with Destro's family pet. Last edited by sisco; 11-26-2022 at 01:44 AM.. |
