Looking at the Classified Target PP vs. TF line starting to hit now, it got me wondering, "does Tiger Force specifically fight against Python Patrol?" Obviously you can setup your ranks however you see fit, but I remember as a child starting to collect around 1989. The stores and flyers had Slaughter's marauders (shoutout to the Equalizer which was my first vehicle!) and Python Patrol, and in my mind, those two teams were destined to fight each other. Just curious, does anyone else have any memories, ideas, or the like of how sub-factions would engage each other? What about Night Force? Iron Grenadiers?

They don't really exist in my head-canon. Ninja Force is obviously a thing, even though I don't care for having so many choppy-socky guys show up for GI Joe at once, but I don't really "do" Python Patrol, Tiger Force, Night Force or Slaughter's Marauders. Just repaints to re-sell old toys. Even as a kid, I didn't buy it lol.

Sub teams only serve one purpose: to release "new" figures with old molds new paints.
Python Patrol - Python Patrol make sense. Cobra picking a viper/BAT/CG etc., from each unit to form a specialized stealth strike group with radar absorbent paint for a special mission. That's cool! Tiger Force - not so much. GIJoe is already a specialized strike force with specialized members, just throwing "tiger stripes" on their uniforms does absolutely nothing. The only ones I collected were new characters, like Skystriker (although it's kind of dumb to name a guy with the same name as an already well established vehicle.) Slaughter's Marauder - the blue, brown, green paint scheme supposedly "enables them to successfully blend into a woodland or jungle environment"? Not really, not with the blue. They just stick out looking ugly no matter where they are. However, I did collect the vehicles, which are repurposed vehicle bodies with new turrets. The Equalizer remain one of favorite, looking a lot like a Flakpanzer Gepard. Sky Patrol - Opposite of the Marauders, I only collected the figures, while chrome vehicles look cool, but they make no sense for a military unit. Night Force - if they didn't go all out into neon color in later years, they wouldn't need night force. |

good question.
because yeah totally, tiger force and python patrol appeared at the same time for toys, i associate the two of them together. slaughters marauders - i look at them as on their own for mud fighting. that is stupid. i know it's stupid. but that's how i always saw them. they fight wherever swampy. the rest are pretty much self explanatory. def, eco warriors, iron grenadiers (they are destro's army and fight whoever destro wants, probably not cobra), etc. |

Everyone fought everyone. Like with the comics, I didn't distinguish between who was who. The comics have Cesspool, Zarana, and Road Pig working together? Well, then the Dreadnoks and Eco-Warriors bad guys all worked together.
Most of the time Python Patrol, Tiger Force, etc. were the only way my parents could afford to get me the older molds of figures because even back then at toy shows early Joes were ungodly expensive. Only Viper and Officer I had were the PP ones. And we certainly couldn't afford to army build so all the lone troopers had to work together or there was no army. |

Let's not forget about the most recent sub team, Wolf Squad.
In 2015-2016, Hasbro unsuccessfully attempted to return to that concept of a new sub team (Wolf Squad) for selling repainted product, starting with the 50th Anniversary Silent Strike set, but it just didn't seem to catch on this time, and the G.I. Joe team was laid off shortly after that.

Yes, according to what Derryl Depriest and Mark Weber explained at G.I. Joe Convention panels, it was called the Wolf Squad and was just sort of snuck into the product line without seeking any approval of the company higher management. The most recent Wolf Squad emblem sighting was during the HasLab Skystriker project reveals, when it was explained that backers would be given the option to decorate their aircraft in a variety of ways, including Wolf Squad livery.

I don't use them at all. I personally think these sub-teams were a brilliant marketing idea to justify re-releasing older toys, but most of them look silly and have stupid names.
