It's a cartoon is what it is. They're full of meaningless filler. In this case, that's just 80's cartoon techno-kibble of the particular Sunbow variety. You see that same sort of mechanical/computery type-shit everywhere in Sunbow (and other studios) toons as background filler. At least that cool shit takes more effort than pulling a Hanna-Barbera and repeating the same background scene over and over. I'm sure at the time they never dreamed nerds 40 years later would be scrutinizing frames with cartoon ladies' legs in them and wondering wtf that thing is in the background. lol
What's interesting to me is the odd mish-mash of futurism and "reality" in cartoons like this. That image is a good example. There you got this 80s TV, complete with old-skool picture tube (but with a more futuristic look to the controls for the set), right next to something that's supposed to be some bit of techno-future shit. TV sets in particular showed this throughout the cartoon's run: one episode had a family watching yet another Cobra threat/ultimatum from this giant wall-mounted flat-screen in their living room, while random passersby watched it from the tube TVs in the showroom window of an electronics store circa 1970.

This is a screenshot from Red Rocket's glare. Every time I watch it, I can't figure out what this is supposed to be. The object is to the right of the TV.
Is it an appliance of some kind? Its design seems very intentional. It's not a washer/dryer, it's not an oven or kitchen appliance, and it's inside, so it's not A/C. Does anyone remember something like this existing at their home or someone else's? I understand the animation was done overseas. Is this something that didn't exist in the USA? What is it? Attachment 206828 Seriously though, with all those vents, it about has to be an AC unit or computer. Maybe an old printer that the artists decided to randomly deposit in that poor girl's living room. my vote is still a big stereo. the vents can be artsy ways to cover up speakers.
