Mid 80s - 1997 - Childhood years. Probably got my first GI Joe when I was three or four in 85/86. Loved GI Joe throughout my childhood. Last GI Joe I remember purchasing from the original ARAH run was Battle Corps Flint in 95 (Could have been 96). I was 13 so I kind of aged out but kept my collection around. I do remember buying a Moray Hydrofoil in 1997 too.
1999-2005 - I got my first job and discovered ebay. I built up a really great collection of vintage figures and vehicles. I stopped buying vintage figures in the spring of 2000 prior to graduating high school. I kept them around until 2002 when I was in college and sold off a bulk of my collection for beer money. I collected the RAHC and invested heavily in the New sculpt era figures and vehicles from 2000-2005. I would go on epic toy hunts over my summer college breaks on weekends and buy up whatever I could - Comic book packs, DTC - all of it. 2006 - I was a year or two out of college and I remember I would go out get loaded and come home late night and bid on Joes. Still have a damned near perfect Snow Cat in my collection from that era LOL. 2007-2012 - I went all in on the 25th, ROC, POC, 50th, Resolute - bought up everything I could. It was a great time to collect. 2014-2015 - I had left all my Joes at my parents house and they brought everything up one summer and I got pulled back in. I tracked down alot of the 50th anniversary stuff until the line ended. 2016-2019 - I sold off almost all my ME stuff and started going all in on vintage ARAH stuff up to the 2000s O-rings. 2020-present - I reacquired a smaller ME collection which I sold off again. Invested in the Retro line which I also sold off since O-rings were coming back. My vintage collecting has slowed down greatly. I think I've reached the point where I am 95% content with my ARAH Vintage collection and only have a few figures and maybe a vehicle or two I'd consider. Most of my interest now is focused on the O-ring line and some of the kickstarters. It's been a long strange trip LOL. |

The short answer:
Hiatus from 1987-1990, 1994-2001, 2016-2020 The long answer: I had about 5 figures in '85/'86, then went on hiatus. Around'91 or so I was at a Kmart and saw the Battle Corps Road Block and Gung-Ho. Recognizing the names, I got back into the figures and then the comic again. I continued getting about a dozen of the characters I recognized thru '94 and went back and got as many 82-85 figures I could from flea markets. I continued searching for the vintage toys when Joe vs Cobra launched in 2002, and pick-up a few of those two packs. I mostly stayed away from Valor vs Venom/Spy troops in 2003/04, save a few that I picked up for customizing. I picked up about 1/2 dozen Sigma 6 figures when they came out in 2005, and felt they had a lot of fun-factor. When 25th launched in 2007 I went all in on the 82-85 characters through the 50th anniversary in 2015 the went on hiatus until Classified on 2021.

I collected action figures throughout elementary and middle school. It was mostly Marvel/DC superheroes with a few Transformers and GI Joe toys. I stopped collecting action figures when I reached High School largely because Lego had started their Marvel & DC superheroes lines in 2012 and I just didn't feel action figures. As my junior & senior years of high school rolled around I really didn't collect toys of any kind and mostly just collected comics, movies, and video games. Then I got a job after high school that paid weekly tips in addition to my income I started using it for comics. Then when GI Joe Classified started I came back to action figure collecting and using my tips to buy figures.
I went to high school from 2012-2016. I saw GI Joe Retaliation in theaters for my 15th birthday. |

I collected Star Wars first but my older brother had Joes. When 25th came out I was still in school and he got me some of them. Started collecting myself in 2009 with RoC and collected on and off until the end of 50th, where I switched to Black Series and Legends for a while. Came back with classified but pulled out of the whole collecting world in 2021 and only recently came back, but am no longer a completionist in any line and only kinda dabble, only getting what I really want

For G.I. Joe, I have had a few lulls.
1983 - 1988 I originally collected ARAH as a kid like everybody else. Got into other toys and lost interest in Joes by '89 and then toys in general 2007 - 2014 Did not get back into GI Joe until the 25th debuted with the two 5-pack sets in June '07 and collected the ME line until around 2014ish just before the Club went under. 2017 - 2019 Came back to Joe collecting with the sole purpose of acquiring the entire ARAH line ('82-'94). 2022- now And then finally got back into Joes with Classified last fall in 2021. So my hiatuses for Joe collecting were 1989 - 2006, 2014 - 2016 and 2020 - 2021.

I only started collecting in 2018. I had some Joes as a child, back in the late 80s, but they are not part of my collection as I collect modern 4 inch and some Classified.
