Lyndon Johnson was President and we were just starting to get into Vietnam when I was born, my dad was in the army the first 14 years of my life and the first GI Joe I received about 1969 was a plain old army guy and later I got a joe in the adventure team orange jumpsuit. I was big on the Johnny West cowboy figures as well and loved anything western or cavalry after living at Fort Hood Texas.

1978. I'm British, so my first Hasbro manufactured figures were Quarrel, SAS Force Stalker and Z-Force Steeler in 1983 with the Rapid Fire Bike, Panther and Battle Tank.
My first Hasbro made figure in the OG colour scheme was AF Infantryman in 1984 once I collected enough medals to mail away for him. Although I'd actually sent off for The Commander but was too late. (That's Grunt for those who don't know) My first figures with the Hasbro names were Cobra, Footloose and Flint that I bought off a school mate who didn't want them, along with the Checkpoint Alpha playset. That was 1987. My first figures with the name "GI Joe" on them were V2 Storm Shadow and Tiger Force Duke in 1990. |

1985, started getting into Joes in 1988 through 1995 then in 2003 I was fascinated with the new vehicles so started collecting since then with minor pauses through the years when Joe wasn't very mainstream

82.
First Joes were I believe a Cobra Stun and Cobra Hydrofoil for my brother (who was two), and the AWE Striker my dad must have found in some Kiddy City somewhere. Of course my brother DESTROYED the Stun by repeatedly stepping on it a year later because he thought it was fun. We used to use the '78 Sesame Street Mr. Hooper's Store playset as Joe Headquarters (Because all I had was Clutch and all he had was Lamprey, our fights were small). In the late 80s, we'd always go to the huge Das Awkscht Fescht in Macungie Township and I'd walk away with boxes of random Joes since my dad would usually buy them that way for me. It's where I got pretty much everything, including an almost complete Flagg in the box for $30 and an almost complete GI Joe HQ with two Mobats for $40. First figures I actually remember we got in the store were definitely the '89 wave, as I have those cardbacks still. Most likely because we were looking for TMNT stuff. |

72' My first Joes were bought in May or June of 82 from a store called, Jafco in the Pacific Northest. Snake-eyes, Shortfuse, and Breaker - all for a $1.81 each. I remember how excited I was when my mom handed the over to me. I had been watching the commercials for the Marvel Comic, and then the figures for what seemed like an eternity, and now they were finally in my hands. Good times!

82 - my first JOES (and most my toys actually) were actually all hand me downs from my mother's friend's son who was starting to outgrow them. Looking back I think the only figures I for sure remember were Short-Fuze and Breaker who I had no knowledge of at the time since I wasn't reading the comics then. I would have been playing with these in the late 80s and early 90s.
In the Philly area there used to be a store called Woolworth's that sold toys (and apparently military surplus guns) and my mom would take me there to browse with an occasional purchase. She was a waitress and we did not have surplus money to spend on non essentials but my parents definitely still did from time to time. Other stores that are no longer around we shopped for JOES and toys at were KB Toys, Kiddie City and of course Toys R' Us. Last edited by CG Steve; 10-14-2022 at 06:54 PM.. |

I'm 48, about to be 49 in January. I was born in 1974. I was introduced to GI Joe by the toys first then the cartoon. 1984 was my GI Joe introduction year. I was 10 years old. I actually didn't get into the comics till Issue 72 in June 1988, the start of the Cobra Civil War.
