I wish that they didn't give us this version of R 'n R (as I prefer the original,) but I'm glad they did because it's letting me know as consumer that Lenny and the design team aren't beholden to give us a 6" facsimile of a figure we owned in the 80's.
My biggest gripe is the weapons choice. If the figure is going to be an update then his "blaster," should be something currently in use or is being tested by the military. This version of Rock 'n Roll should have came with a S.A.W. the SIG N.G.S.W. AR, (or another weapons system the Army is field testing.) The same goes for Grunt. If Grunt is going to be an update he should come with the SIG Spear and not a M16. Vintage weapons should only come with a vintage inspired Classified character. Giving an updated character "blasters," that have their origins in the Vietnam Era, (and were 15, 20 years old when A.R.A.H. debuted,) lacks congruency.

I chuckled every time they said "blaster". I guess they're so PC they didn't want to offend anyone by saying "guns!"
Anyway, about the guns, I guess you can thank everyone that was in an uproar when Snake Eyes didn't come with an UZI - that antiquated inaccurate "spray and pray" submachinegun that nobody use today. Now I hated that gun with a hole that the first Snake Eyes came with, but yeah, he should have came with an updated current submachinegun instead. So I guess Hasbro believed that if R&R didn't come with a M-60 (technically it should have been an MG-3), or if Grunt didn't come with an M-16, people would be mad like they did with Snake Eyes. |

I don't mind Rock n' Roll's "old school" M-60. I see the Joes as "extremely customized" and carrying what they prefer. I mean, they carry swords and crossbows and wear football jerseys or yellow 1980's Jazzercise unitards. They're not supposed to look like Delta operators.

I think that's exactly the reason. They're damned if they do, and damned if they don't. If I had to guess, I'd imagine that most Joe collectors aren't gun experts and probably lean more toward the original figures' loadouts than not. Besides, there's always GridIron for the guys who do care and really know their shit.

I think the M60E3 or E4 is a good choice as it is still in use by specops units and IMHO is a heck of a good medium machine gun.
HK716 is a good choice for Grunt, but the SIG or FNs would be a good choice. The Uzi was definitely a gun of the 80s action movies. HK MP7 or MP5? |

I was expecting (and would have been perfectly fine with a straight-up 82 version of RnR) but I am surprised how much I like the choices they made for him. The two-tone shirt is a nice homage to his second figure, and I think it will help break up all that green in the O13. And I love how they leaned into his codename and filecard and made him look like a guy who surfs, lifts weights and plays bass in a band.
With Rock 'n Roll I'm really not trippin' on the up date because it isn't like we're not going to get a green shirt R 'n R next year without the tattoos. With the exception of Flint, Major Bludd, and Beach Head, there's at least two versions of every named character in the line so it would foolish to think they're not going to repaint R 'n R in his green shirt. Yeah man, this shit is right and it needs to be in the inventory. Though the SIG Spear would be the standard rifle for service personal (therefore a natural choice for Grunt's rifle,) the HK716 has a similar aesthetic as the M16 and could work work nicely to with Grunt. Quote:

I have already accepted the fact that I will almost always be spending extra money to outfit this line with weapons from Gridiron. I fully embrace and understand the line as a whole is military fantasy, but I want my weapons to be real. For me personally, I like old and modern to exist at the same time when it comes to firearms they carry. Further, no matter how based on a real firearm design Hasbro puts out with a figure, they still look very poorly made and cheap looking to me. Hence the decision to go with Gridiron even for "basic" weapons.
PS: Ironically "blaster" sounds worse than gun if they were in fact being PC in not saying "gun". The former gives it the action of shooting someone (not to mention street slang) while the latter still is an object without an action but hey that could be a whole political discussion can of worms I don't want to get into. |

I hated the Rock and Roll that they showed (thank goodness Storm Shadow dodged the tattoo stick), so they could have armed him with a potato gun for all I care.
But I do want to say that regardless of current army practices, Grunt should come with an M4A1. It looks enough like an M16 to be true to the original figure, without looking like it's 40 years out of date.
