I find that keeping things in their proper perspective helps to temper these kind of feelings.

Cobra Commander is my favorite. I think he's the bee's knees.

Not in 37 years. Mutt for the Joe's, Firefly for Cobra. But there will always be a ton of nostalgia with 1985 Snake Eyes w/Timber.

I always wanted Snake Eyes so badly as a kid but never did get him until a friend gave me his SE in '89 (v3), but I had just quit collecting Joes at that point so it wasn't as special and didn't have any impact on me.
So for that reason, no, he was never my fav Joe or ARAH figure since I didn't have him until years later as an adult.

No. His figure was cool, but not the coolest. He was cool in some episodes of the show, but not in others. He's cool in the early comics, but lame in later ones.
He's still pretty cool, but he's not my favorite. |

For me he is. It didn't start that way but the comic made me absolutely love him. It was essentially his book.
My Main gal will always be Scarlett. She may have given me my redhead fetish. She is also an early example of a very empowered female character. Although Cover Girl and Lady Jaye were no slouchess. I know as a kid Flint was my guy in the cartoons but as I got older I kind of find him insanely annoying in the comics. I hated Beachhead as a kid but absolutely loved him after GIJOE the movie. I was a weird kid. I have an insane love for storm shadow too. I also love Scifi, Lowlight and Lifeline, my three first Joes. But not just because of that, I thought their characters were more fleshed out in their 86 season than others. But I also like obscure characters like Repeater for instance. Always loved his toy and from the looks of things he would have been a protagonist of that wave if they had had a cartoon since he was the main guy in the promotional images everywhere. I sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have a cartoon with those characters. Last edited by SlackerViper; 09-06-2022 at 09:29 PM.. |

It can definitely feel like that. In threads like these, post after post of "he's dumb" "he smells" he's a bad friend" "he ruins everything" take a greater emotional toll on people who like the character than the people who dislike the character are affected by the posts of "he's neat" "he's cool" "I like him."
I think this thread has shown us there are four groups of us: 1. Those who like Snake-Eyes because of how he was handled in the comics (whether he's their favorite character or no). 2. Those who dislike Snake-Eyes because of how he was handled in the comics. 3. Those who don't think too much about him but lean towards liking him (usually not a comics reader). 4. Those who don't think too much about him and don't have strong enough feelings to say they like him (usually not a comics reader). |

I feel like they could have done a lot better with the silent commando character. Instead, they just slapped ninja on everything because it was the 80's and that was a big deal. Ninja has been associated with soooo many things over the past decades that the word has lost it's meaning. It now means nameless guy in hood who is decent at stealth and martial arts, but not as good as whatever main character is featured. They are glorified cannon fodder. And, to me at least, Snake Eyes and the Joe line played a part in that as well.
But I feel there is a ton of lost potential, which might be a weird thing to say for a character that has been done to death. I just feel they always fall back on the ninja side of things and his combat history/training get tossed aside as a blurb on a file card or a quick flashback in the comics. I think he could have been a better character if he was a silent commando who was always training to improve his skills. And leave his mutism a mystery. We don't need it shoehorned in as part of the ninja story. Just drop all the ninja stuff and move forward in a new direction. But hey, kids love ninjas! So, I obviously have no idea what I'm talking about. |

Snake Eyes was intriguing in the sunbow cartoon but almost completely mishandled. He never used his sword (that I can remember), He never really interacted with SS and they never gave any back story. The comic however addressed all of these issues ( pardon the pun) and really made the character great. They later they changed the comic title for him and added a stupid amount of ninjas and then replaced him with "fake eyes" ( I don't approve of ANY of these decisions by the way). all that to say Snake eyes from Marvel Issue 1-123 is my all time favorite. I am pretty sure that Hama caught lightning in a bottle and it is very unlikely that anyone (including Hama) will ever replicate the original Marvel Snake Eyes.
I like Wild Bill and Cobra Commander as well ;) |

Can we take a moment to step back from the topic and appreciate the ironic humor in Snake Eyes: Origins being a story about Snake Eyes being "a bad friend who ruins everything"? I find this hilarious given your quote.
