Not everyone is determined to discredit you DT. There are only a select few trying to do that. You do have others, including me, that share the same ideas on Zandar and Zarana. I mean, look at your poll thread you made earlier. You have more people siding with you.

Lucas was the creator of the characters and the writer.. McQUarrie did the visuals based off of what Lucas gave him. Hasbro was the creator of the characters and the visuals.. but they didn't have anything to tell the story. They needed the comics to help sell the toys. They went to Marvel... Hama worked for Marvel and wrote the stories and bios to help sell the toys. Hama wrote stories based off what Hasbro gave him. |

While the painted card art next to the action figure does not look to me as if Zarana has a torn blouse, others might see something different. When I got out the comic books to inspect the drawn edges of her collar and shirt, I made the following observations:
Zarana's dragon tattoo only seems to appear on a single panel of at the end of Marvel Comics issue number 50, and her blouse is not ripped. G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero issue number 51 (September 1986) fails to give her (or Zandar for that matter) any tattoo or any upper arm pieces of armor, and her blouse still is not ripped or torn. G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero issue number 52 (October 1986) covers up Zarana's upper arm with some armor for the first time, demonstrating that the artist now must have had the action figure for reference. G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero issue number 60 (June 1987) is possibly the most important issue because it has Zarana in a fight with Zanzibar, in which some pictures have her blouse edges and collar clearly torn up and ragged, while other panels do not. This might be the significant moment when the comic readers accepted the idea that Zarana has a torn shirt. Earlier comic issues may or may not have had a torn shirt (depending on the imagination of the reader), but this one absolutely did.

Evidence has been presented in the form of Rudat's notes, and is not only fair, but perhaps, our responsibility, to determine if this evidence is valid and what it tells us about the question we're trying to answer. It's not personal to point out that that answer may not arrive at the conclusion you wish. It also doesn't mean your conclusion is wrong; it simply means this evidence isn't the proof.

Yes Rudat and Hasbro designed the figures. and yes Hama wrote the bios and comics.. but the Star Wars analogy doesn't fit.

Rudat also labeled Zarana as "girl Dreadnok" and Zartan's sister. He called Zandar "Zartan's Kid Brother" but did say that Zandar and Zarana would have same tattoo.. When Hama was given these designs he didn't originally give them that connection... their filecards don't mention each other, just Zartan... so its likely that any of this special relationship was developed by Hama well after their initial release |

it means Rudat never had any design for a ripped shirt and the scarf being part.

It makes for better lore than "he's just wearing a scarf." Let's lay it all out, bare: There are people in the fandom who didn't grow up thinking of Zarana & Zandar as twins, and are trying to remove it because they don't want them to be twins.
There. I said it.

Not everything you love about them is uniform, that's all. The twin language thing only occurs in the IDW continuity. The scarf being part of her shirt doesn't appear to have any official backing. Hama acknowledged the twin aspect, so there's one thing that can more or less be considered canon, regardless of what the Wikipedia editor thinks.

I never gave any thought whatsoever to Zarana or Zandar for several decades. They simply didn't matter to me. I only chime in cause there are SO MANY of these threads. You tend to push any discussion into this direction, so we all participate in them by default.
I've said over and over that you are certainly free to think anything you want. Why would anyone try to take that away from you? On the flip side, if you're really attempting to convince people that they were "wrong" about these two characters for the last four decades, that's a little different. I can only assume the majority of GI Joe fans are like me: they never cared much about Zarana or Zandar one way or the other. |
