My guess is this is a byproduct of the era most of this stuff is based on - Females in general got the shaft far as the toys of the day went. If you look at other shows of the era like for example COPS and Visionaries specifically every character EXCEPT the females from each side on the show got a figure.
At any rate, since the thread title refers to "characters" as opposed to just "action figures" ... in a series of recent interviews, Larry Hama has actually addressed GI Joe's gender gap/racial disparity. Both in terms of his efforts to rectify it (at the time), and to apologise/"make amends" for not doing more. (Which speaks to Hama's own excellent "character".)

In the newer Hama comics, Duke's wife is also black, right? And becomes a doctor for G.I. Joe after she is found alive?
Forgive me if I'm misremembering, my memory is crap.

I don't think that story went anywhere, I think she went back to being a doctor, I don't remember it being for GI Joe. I know she started as humanitarian aid, and then they did a really poor job elaborating at what their relationship looked like after she was kidnapped and rescued. I just remember wanting to see more out of this as it was the first piece of character development we'd seen in a long time, but it went nowhere. |

[QUOTE]As a kid, I can honestly say that it never mattered to me what race a character was, so long as they were cool (or at least, cool-looking). Roadblock, Stalker, Airborne, Spirit, Storm Shadow, and the like were favorites because of how they were portrayed.
If anything, as a boy of the 80s, the character's gender usually mattered much more due the stigma of boys playing with female figures that was simply a fact of life back then. But even there, GI Joe excelled at creating engaging female characters that were just as important, just as integral, to the play patterns as the male characters were. I had Scarlett and Lady Jaye as a kid (and thought about "borrowing" my cousin's Baroness many times), but those of us who knew GI Joe knew the ladies were some of (if not THE) best characters. The only other female figure I can remember wanting as a kid was the Super Powers Wonder Woman, and even then, I can remember my mom looking at me funny when I asked if I could get her. That said, I'm not interested in counting what race/ethnicity/gender characters are, just make them interesting, compelling characters with good-looking designs. I know representation is important, but characterization should always come first, IMO.[/QUOTE THIS!!! Last edited by Hat Trick; 08-10-2022 at 12:37 PM.. |

Beyond the four female "COPS 'N Crooks", the most glaring omissions are Tula from "The Pirates of Dark Water", Hyena + Fox (from "Gargoyles"), Judge JB McBride ("BraveStarr"), and Stellara from "Sectaurs". (Though those last two were slated for eventual release within cancelled second waves.)

Oh, and Tess Trueheart (1990 "Dick Tracy" movie figures) is another really notable absence. Though Playmates did produce The Blank, and she's amazing (even if she more closely resembles Harpo Marx than Madonna**). Although, rather expensive/hard to find (since The Blank was apparently never released in the US). * https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/a...rgive-yourself ** Spoiler alert!

I totally agree. And, hopefully, Hama has attained some semblance of self-forgiveness*. It was a different era, I'm sure he did the best he could with what (and who) he had to work with.

Always amazed at that idiotic decision to produce less Blanks to avoid a spoiler.
It was the 90s! The moment people knew it was Madonna that figure was gonna sell like hotcakes. |
