Since the Joes aren't diverse enough they joined Cobra.

Native Americans definitely need better representation. ARAH had 2: Airborne and Spirit and Spirit looks like/was characterised like a refugee from a John Wayne Cavalry movie. I know about Dart, from later, but he's D-list at best and nowhere near as well known. The best known Native American is a stereotype insult.

It didn't help that Ruin Johnson saddled him with popularity-kryptonite, Rose Tico, and that cringey Canto Bight side-quest.

My guess is this is a byproduct of the era most of this stuff is based on - white male boys were the target demo and the manufacturing braintrusts perhaps didnt think thats what that demo wanted. Females in general got the shaft far as the toys of the day went. If you look at other shows of the era like for example COPS and Visionaries specifically every character EXCEPT the females from each side on the show got a figure. Transformers has 1 female and Arcee never got a figure until decades after the fact.
And for anybody who wasnt white in general there wasnt much to speak of. MOTU had one black person period; thats why IMO Clamp Champ got rushed out early in Origins and Mattel jumped at the chance to have Sun Man and co. in the line for more diversity - hell Sun Man EXISTS because a black woman's young son told her "he couldnt be superhero because none looked like him" in 1985 or so. And with that said if you look at GI Joe's 80s lineup they had more female and black characters than any other major toy line of the day even with the VAST disparity. As someone who grew up in the '80s, with the exception of Blaxploitation films, African-American actors/actresses rarely starred in a lead role. The same goes for women, and typically if a woman was cast as a lead, there was more of a sex-ploitation (I think I just made up a word) type casting going on. So, with the original G.I. Joe toy line, there were hardly any women, let alone black women. Take for example from 1982-1994, as far as female characters go, you had: Scarlett, Cover Girl, Baroness, Lady Jaye, Zarana, Jinx, and Scarlett (Ninja Force). For five years there were no female characters at all. But I had never even thought about other toy lines until you pointed it out. I just did a quick look, and man, it took 22 seasons before even the Power Rangers had a black female character. WOW. At least Hasbro and the comic books have tried being more diverse since the mid-1990s. Jason |

I'm not sure what you're referring to, but Aisha (Karan Ashley) joined the cast in season 2, way way sooner than being claimed here. (That wasn't really planned though, she was one of 3 replacements introduced when half of the cast quit over a pay dispute.) Tanya (Nakia Burrise), her direct replacement in season 4, was also a Black woman.

I think we're forgetting too that with the increased prices people might be more selective in the figures they pick up, take Classified for instance...
pegwarmers: CC Lady Jaye Flint BBQ females in the SE:O line Gung-Ho There's obvious reason for those figures sitting on shelves We're not seeing Roadblocks or Spirit's sitting on shelves, plus the inclusion of differing skin tones on Cobras has been positive I'm surprised they haven't reissued wave 1 in stores. We haven't had a proper Duke, Snake-Eyes, Roadblock, and Destro in stores since Wave 1's initial release. |
