Looking at the Hasbro GI Joe site, I just noticed this blurb for the first time:
https://gijoe.hasbro.com/en-us/characters "G.I. Joe is a highly skilled, on-demand, international special missions force of men and women from around the globe, selected for their elite abilities in their chosen disciplines. Officially, G.I. Joe doesn?t exist, and very few know the truth: these heroes fight a secret war, as the first and last line of defense against forces that seek to plunge our world into chaos." I remember when the Rise of Cobra movie came out, the fandom was up in arms about GI Joe being a NATO group in the film. Has that died down by the year 2022? I personally think its fine as long as they don't make changes to existing characters. It could be interesting to loop in some of the former "Action Force" characters into the line as well as introduce some new ones. If the purpose of the Joes is to combat Cobra, I would think some other Nations would be involved if they are an international terrorist group. Is the general fandom OK with this or should the Joe Team be "American" only? |

I am okay with it as long as the existing characters retain the traits that make them who they are. Like you said, it opens things up for new characters from other parts of the world.

As a kid, it was always a big deal when the Joes met their international counterparts like the Oktober Guard or had guys like Big Ben pop in, and making it a multinational force might take away from that a bit, but if it went international, it wouldn't bother me. For the purist in me, however, GI Joe will always be the "Real American Hero."

Hasbro was already flirting with this idea by the late 80s.

I didn't mind it Rise of Cobra, so I wouldn't mind it now. It seems appropriate given that the Cobra threat isn't isolated to the states.

There's always been international cooperation and members, but I think its hard to run away from the name GIJoe and what people think of. Also think the card backs on retro look a little bar missing A Real American Hero sub logo, but Hasbro is gonna do what they want.
I'm tapped out on bad Joe movies, so they can do what they want if they ever come back, unless it looks amazing, won't pay attention. |

I'm fine with either option honestly. I do agree that if you go with international, it does open up options for some new characters. Just as long as they leave the original characters with their OG backgrounds, I'm cool with however they want to proceed.

If they reboot and make some of the Joes international but keep their basic characteristics the same, I'm down with that. It's what the 1985+ Action Force did. Although, as I've said before, it'd make more sense in that case to return to GI Joe being a single character and giving the unit a more non-nation-specific name like Battle Corps or Special Action Force...
