Ok. You are obviously right (Being serious here). I wouldn't make fun of the vast majority of folk "cosplaying". Because they don't come off like French Dip. I'm not speaking to stuff going down on other sites. Just about the dude in this image and my limited interaction with his content. You act like he does and post those kind of images? I'm making fun of ya.
Cosplaying is such a rabbit hole. Some were certainly built for it and it's like a momentary distraction from the convention stench of old paper dust, body odors, and convention flu. |

i dont cosplay, i make replica props and wear costumes. there's a distinction that people refuse to make between a costumer and a cosplayer.
i dont like cosplayers and i dont want to be associated with them. just as much as i do not like the 501st(i have personal beef with a member that was harassing and stalking me) and mandalorian mercs, but want to make a personalized mandalorian costume and a biker scout costume. my goal is to make an accurate biker scout, but not join any group. just as make my own mandalorian costume and not have the expectations that i need to follow some rules for my personal made up theme - the whole notion of mandalorian mercs having approvals is stupid, beyond "dont make your armor look like a pile of shit." that's not how i approach my prop stuff. i dont do pile of shit. |

Wait...There are rules for grown ass adults playing dress up? That's some of the dumbest shit I've ever heard. I always just assumed folk just showed up and took some pics. Who makes the rules? Do they have to get approval from an "official" source? I'm gonna guess,"No". Makes me think of "Role Models". Which makes me remember one of the greatest movie quotes of all time: "I like boobies."- Ronnie Quote:
If you guys ever watch someone use a whip that actually understands the implementation of the weapon pay attention to their support arm/hand. It'll move in synched opposition to the hand wielding the weapon. Whereas Dip's is just tucked up there like a vestigial extremity. Skilled practicioners will also use their feet and hips. Dips's stance sucks too.

experience in a community without guidelines: i was really into making ghostbusters props (i 3d modeled the first accurate pepakura proton pack that could be made out of paper, resin and fiberglass, or adapted to make out of wood or plastic or metal. my project was abused so i removed it. it's been a few years and it hasnt pinged on any internet searches nor have i been asked for it. im glad) i poured a lot of money, time, and work to make my ghostbuster stuff accurate to the films - and it was irritating to have someone come along and carelessly buy whatever stuff from the worst sellers (that take advantage of people) throw on a dirty flight suit, and schlub around an event with people that cared - generally these people were a drag to be around and caused far more trouble than they were worth. where i split from the 501st ethos is i have negative experiences with local florida 501st members and i dont want to be associated with them or give any of them the opportunity to say whether or not a costume im already going to put the effort and money into making accurate is not. the positive, is the "rules" are more guidelines, and a great thing to make sure your star wars costume is accurate. they're called "Costume Reference Library" and you dont nearly have to do as much research as i'd had to do for say - my mad max roadwarrior collection. the other positive, is there are levels of accuracy and acceptance for your costumes, and they are not difficult to obtain at these levels. i'd be aiming to make the lancer status of biker scout: https://databank.501st.com/databank/..._Scout_trooper while lancer specifications arent mentioned here, it is on the pathfinder's forum for scouts. basically you have a couple extra bits you have to add to your costume. the hardest part of star wars imperial costumes isnt "building" but the "getting" because you have to find a competent part maker that makes accurate costumes and isnt fly by night here one day and gone with your money a month later. anyway, if you want to join a detachment of 501st, you have to follow the crl, and then let some dingus look your costume over and say whether or not it follows the crl you should have already followed to be in the situation for someone to say it meets it or not. i dont have any doubts about meeting or exceeding the expecations to join 501st though, again, it's personal experience with florida 501st members that i wouldnt join it here. the mandalorian mercs is worse, because they're making crl's pretty much on the fly as the mandalorian series is going - because it ruined their already mess of a crl anyway. then you have someone tell you what's wrong with your armor that you will need to fix to hang out with them based on already inconsistent reference guidelines for your own personal costume. all i want is to make a black pearl armor with a mix of holiday special boba fett and mcquarrie fett looking armor. i sincerely dont have any intention of ever joining a local mando group based on the inconsistency of their guidelines and overall sloppiness i see in the majority of people's mando get ups. i would take great insult to put all the effort i generally do to make a sharp fantastic looking mandalorian costume, only for some slob with a bad paint job and an ugly helmet tell me my costume has something wrong with it based on inconsistent minutia. not even kidding, there are more ugly mandalorian costumes than there are good ones. ultimately, the stuff to make a good star wars costume is accessible. you can do all this stuff on your own without any second or third party involvement. i've said it before around here about galaxy's edge: the less other people involved in my interests or experiences the better.
