If you were General Flagg (or Hasbro) assembling a GI Joe team in 2023, what specialties would you give your initial 13 members? Commandos are always in fashion, but would a bazooka trooper make the cut in 2023? What kind of equipment are your next-gen soldiers field testing? Is it still lasers and jet packs?
You've got 13 slots to fill. Who are you recruiting? |

A few of my takes. In the end, both are acknowledging that these are action figures sets--all other things are heavy gravy
Take 1 - OG13 2020 (before the Walmart Retro rebuilds): go back to the special missions counter-terrorist tag line, make them all rangers, keep the original characters out of respect, same basic build uniform for all with effective tweaks (heads, headgear, gear armament). Multicam as the new green. Two fireteams plus driver crews and key base personnel. 2022-06-21_02-30-35 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr [status photo; stuck on Scarlett multi-cam repaint] Take 2 - T13 2020 (under revision), stay with special missions counter-terrorist tag line, thow out most of the OGs, use all the historically favorites/icons, blend with iterations with heavy influence from 2007 figures on. 13 figures of special ops can be redundant so break into unofficial subteams by personel history, original military background, age groups (but can then mix and match for storytelling//play pattern). You've got 13 slots to fill. Who are you recruiting? 1. Field Commander = Duke 2. Squad Leader = Flint 3. SEAL = Shipwreck 4. Ranger = Stalker 5. Recon = Ambush 6. Grenadier = Gung-Ho 7. Machine Gunner = Roadblock 8. Marksman = Lowlight 9. Communications = Breaker 10. EOD = Tunnel Rat 11. Infiltration = Snake Eyes 12. Intelligence = Lady Jaye 13. Vehicle Driver = Clutch *Note* Uniforms would basically be the same design with each character but with minor differences in gear and color. So, you could have Lady Jaye in a solid green outfit, Snake Eyes and Flint with black tops and camo pants, other characters could be all camo or green tops with camo pants. Jason |

I've thought of this through the years, a "what would make up a modern Joe team?" scenario. I'm thinking the specialties would be:
1. Team Leader-like an '80s OG13 Hawk, I think he was a Col. when the line first began? 2. Ranger 3. Helicopter Pilot 4. Navy SEAL Sniper 5. Psychological Warfare-using some funky mind control tech to spook the enemy 6. Undercover Agent/Covert Ops 7. Tech Specialist/drone operator-I love that little drone accessory that came with the Retaliation Duke. They can also be the team's hacker and digital combat expert...because nowadays not every war is on the battlefield, some are fought by leaving nasty comments on Instagram. 8. Armor/Missile Specialist-like Scrap Iron, but not a jerk. I always liked the concept of a small portable missile launcher. 9. Search and Rescue/Medic- with one of those rescue dogs! The team needs a canine companion. 10. Heavy Weapons/machine gunner 11. Armored Vehicle Driver/mechanic- give them a new, souped-up VAMP/Hummer/tank thingamajig with a dedicated driver...I always loved Clutch and how attached he was to his VAMP. 12. ROBO-JOE!!! We're in the future now, this has to be a real thing. 13. Commando- Just make it Snake Eyes, you always need Snake Eyes. |

A wise man once told me, "[Scarlett] was the first ninja on the team...not Snake Eyes."

*Signaller - sure every bleeper and his brother can have a satellite phone, but you need someone who's trained to fix that stuff too.
*Medic - duh. *Sniper - also duh. *JTAC - someone to call in the air-strikes with precision and speed. *EOD/Demolitions - if they can disarm stuff they can blow stuff up. *Support gunner - there's no such thing as overkill. *Anti-tank guided weapon specialist - again, any numpty can use an AT4 or a LAW, but you need a guy who's able to repair them if they go wrong. *Intelligence/Site exploitation - a sneaky type who can do brush-passes, pick pockets, pick locks, hack computers too, maybe. Also a specialist driver for car driving, the kind who can weave in and out of busy traffic without getting sideswiped or pulled over and lose a tail as well as be the tail. *Paratroop jump-master - someone not only specialist in HALO/HAHO jumps but can also make tandem jumps with non-jump qualified personnel and jump with cargo attached with mission specialism gear if needed. *Vehicle driver - specialist in armour and mobility warfare. *CBRN specialist - someone who knows what to do if the Novichok hit the fan. *dive master - specialist in frogman operations who can make sure the other dive qualified personnel don't cock up. *pilot - fixed wing and rotary wing can fly anything from a Cessna to a C-17. |
