Long-winded post:
My Mom has (had) 4 sisters, and I was close to them growing up. They lived all around Texas, from San Antonio to Seguin to Dallas. Plus, my Dad's mother lived in Houston. We lived in San Antonio. I'd go stay with them for weekends, or a week during the Summer. One of them passed recently (the first of them), lived a very long time and we were expecting it. So, I'm talking to my wife and I'm like, "My Aunt Laura was so awesome. I loved staying at her house. She had cable and a VCR before we did, and she bought Coke and had a pool. She bought me Snow Job, Torpedo, and the Star Wars Chicken Walker." The wife is like, "Wait, were you close to her? Or do you just have memories of her buying you toys?" And I'm like, "Well, I associate each Aunt with certain toys! Aunt Connie had a Nintendo and bought me the D&D Warduke at TG&Y. When I went to stay with Aunt Judy in Dallas, I got the Tele-Viper and Trouble Bubble and Snake Eyes version 2. Aunt Catherine in New Braunfels was cool and got me Tomax, Xamot and the Armadillo. Aunt Shirley bought me the MOBAT and Dragonfly for my birthdays." So, she couldn't really understand the relationship I guess? I tried explaining to her that, I didn't love these relatives for buying me little plastic figures. Maybe I loved these toys and associate them with each Aunt, and the time I spent at their houses? Anyone else the same way? Like, very specific memories with certain figures, but nada for other ones? For instance, Dusty I vividly remember buying at the mall, then going to see Missing in Action 2 (I guess it was 1985?). Then there are figures like Alpine or Airtight that I know i had, but don't remember anything about it... Ok, nostalgia time over. |

I think we all must be smoking something to care this much about toys.
But, yeah, I have the odd memory where or how I got a toy, but can't recall the details of others. Like, I specifically remember passing on Dusty because what I was looking for was v.2 SE, and then keeping myself up half the night regretting not buying that Dusty. And while I can't remember where or how I got Storm Shadow (v.1), I vividly recall his demise...I accidentally dropped him in the charcoal grille while my dad was grilling burgers because I was being a dumbass. I was on "squirt bottle duty" (to keep the huge flames down) and was pretending ol' Stormy was dicking around near a volcano or something (I'd probably recently watched the The Temple of Doom or some cartoon with a volcano) and...yeah. Fuckin' sucked. I can also tell you how I lost Super Powers Batman.

I wouldn't worry about it. They're Mnemonic Objects ("trigger objects"), a perfectly normal means of memory recall.

Then there are figures like Alpine or Airtight that I know i had, but don't remember anything about it... Ok, nostalgia time over. Growing up, I didn't live in the same cities as any other family. So, my memories of uncles and aunts are also around periodic visits. In terms of childhood memories, I think of their houses and the entertainment they had on offer (TV rooms, video games, etc). I think that's normal. As much as I liked them, the reality is the parents would hang out, so it's all about what there was to do with my cousins. For instance, when I think of my mom's brother, one prominent memory is of Intellivision and sports-themed video games, as that was the only place I played either. No associations with toys though, as my uncles and aunts only sent money as gifts. At one time, I might have associated that with toys I bought with the money, but those memories are lost to time now. As for memories of buying toys generally, yeah, I'm also the same. Don't remember many, but have vivid memories of some. For example, in 1985 we went down to stay at my great aunt's in Miami Beach. Coming from Canada, a big part of the fun of trips south of the border was shopping. On that trip, I found all three Dreadnoks, maybe at the KB Toys at the Aventura Mall. The memory of them is very vivid, I think in part because they were so different from other figures and that I was so happy to find all three at once. And I can still see myself playing with them at my aunt's place. So, yeah, I guess that comes back around to your aunts and uncles question, though I only indirectly associate them with her, as I was the one who bought them. |

I don't have that with any of my relatives, outside my immediate family. My parents bought me all of my toys. My other relatives just sent me checks.

The memories of family gifting the toys are just the keys to unlocking more memories of them. I'm sure as you talk about your aunt, not the toy, you will remember more.

i remember a lot of things when i was a kid looking at some toys. i still remember getting 91 snake eyes and grunt with my grandmother. she loved my aunt's kids more than my sister and i - and my mom's turned into my grandmother loving my shitty niece more than my son. you know, after years of saying the same things im literally telling her right now. back then it was a weekend at nan's and hitting toys r us on the way up to her farm; it was a happy memory even though the reality sucks. im not going into much more detail, looking back i'd rather she actually cared about our little family than getting a 91 snake eyes. i also remember that same aunt getting me a credit card sized calculator and some underwear for xmas, when we/me with my money as a kid got my cousins some pretty cool star wars toys. i remember saving up to get them an a-wing for xmas after i got mine, so every time i look at that potf2 a-wing i remember that. i dont particularly have any memories with my aunt, except the one time she was babysitting me and she showed me how to carry a bunch of my he-man toys in my shirt and how webstor's mechanism worked. your memories arent really game for people to judge. |
