I don't think it is bad to have memories triggered by something. What is bad is if that is the only thing you cared about. Did you like getting the stuff from her but didn't give a damn about the person giving you the stuff? That would be an issue not having memories triggered by something. It happens to everyone.

Yep. I have these same associations with certain figures. I especially liked your reference to TG&Y! I remember getting Boushh from TG&Y and being blown away how the helmet came off. That was soooo cool at the time.
I can remember getting Buzzer and Ripper at a Farm and Fleet store. Storm Shadow came from Harts. I got Shipwreck after a Dentist appointment - then we went and got ice cream. If I think about it, I can probably remember where I got most of my figures. It was always a big part of collecting to me - not just the 'having of the figure' - but 'scoring' the figure. It was my childhood. I get it. |

Through the lens of an adult, this might seem selfish or superficial, but through the lens of the child you were when you formed these memories, those would be major components to the way you saw the world, and the things your brain will cling to as you age and can't remember other things.
It absolutely takes nothing away from the relationships you shared or who you are or were as a person. The nature of a meaningful relationship changes over time, so those precursors don't apply retroactively. I think most relationships are made up a gestures shared between individuals-someone showing you who they are. That goes double for a kid who wouldn't likely have a deep intellectually or spiritual connection with an adult. A kid forms a bond based on people showing them kindness and care. In this case, in the form of toys received as gifts, toys which you still have fond memories of and love to this day. We could also play the chicken and egg game about whether our love of GI Joe stems from these memories or whether our fondness of these memories stems from our love of GI Joe, but either way, it doesn't invalidate your past relationships.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your aunt.
I think what you're saying is understandable, you were a kid and you were passionate about these particular things, and they allowed you to form this initial bond with these people around you. I don't think that makes you a bad person, especially considering you seem to have self-awareness about it as an adult, and I'm sure other memories will surface over time as well. |

I heavily associate GI Joe with my brothers - which is part of why I got back into collecting them for my own kids and nephews.

Nope, I associate many childhood toys with those who bought them for me, as it's a fond memory!

There's nothing wrong with it-the majority of my Joes have very specific memories for me like spending time on errands with my mom when I was young or evening trips to Targets in college to look for ROC toys. I'd say one reason I collect lots of toys is because they're essentially journals of my life because I can usually remember where I was or what was happening in my life when I got each one.
