Since its inception, the GI Joe brand has been in a state of near constant flux, from the subtle, incremental tonal shifts toward more outlandish sci-fi concepts of the ARAH era to the well-defined brand stories of "Spy Troops" or "Pursuit of Cobra," from the minor construction adjustments of 83-85 to the total aesthetic reinventions of GI Joe Extreme and Sigma 6.
GI Joe has never been one thing, conceptually or structurally, for more than a year or two. Every year or two, the brand changes course. So my question is this: if you had the ability to go back in time with the power to authorize the continuation of just one era of the brand for four more years, which era would it be? Personally, I'd go back to 2011 and authorize the continuation of the Pursuit of Cobra era, both conceptually and aesthetically. For me, 2011 is the 1985 of the Modern era--the brand at its most confident, well-funded, and focused. You can feel the passion and commitment of the designers and brand managers in even the most flawed of the POC releases. More importantly, you can feel them pushing the brand forward, using familiar designs as a launching pad rather than a crutch. But that's just me. How about you? Would you stretch 1984 out a few years? Would you give Sigma 6 more time to discover itself? Would you allow the Valor vs Venom storyline to play itself out a while? |

I'd love to have seen the line continue in 1994. All those prototype pictures that have come out, the whale and battle platform and everything else. It looked like 1995 was going to be a big year.
But for the modern era, defiantly the Pursuit of Cobra/30th Anniversary era. Some of the best figures and vehicles we ever got was in those two lines. Especially the POC/30th Vamps and the POC HISS tank. Looking back it was like a second golden age of GIJoe at the time. |

Interesting question.
I suppose it wouldn't been great if the line had continued past '94. I have a feeling it would have come back around to be grounded. |

I'm not sure if continuing to the Battle-Rangers would have been the best thing because some of those toys looked too outlandish, the Replicators even worse.

I would have loved for the Iron Grenadiers to continue and have their ranks expanded upon.

As a die-hard ARAH guy, I'm going to say Classified. Everything else sort of ran it's course and was gasping it's final breath by the time the plug was pulled.

Looking back, I really enjoyed the VvV era in the early 2000's. Not for those ugly figures with the huge shoulders, but the comic packs and the multi-figure sets where they took vintage figures and played with the paint. The Silent Interlude comic pack and the Cobra Ninja Strike set kind of got me back into collecting. It was a cheap and fun way to get vintage figures again. Some cool artwork on the packages, too.
If I could bring back one thing, it would be comic packs. Love the Hard Master one, with they made a two pack with Soft Master and either Destro, Firefly or Fred (you know the issue I'm talking about!) |

I've always wondered how it would go if toy lines did 5 or 10 year cycles. Every 5 years you have a completely different set of kids who are 5-10. Why not re-release instead of re-booting?

I love comic packs. What a great answer.
