Army Vet. Maybe injured and forced out of the army? Only job he could find was being a used car salesman. Being extremely charismatic he became well known in his neighborhood. Began to resent the system. Ran for some form of public office and won. Realized that the system was too corrupt to change. Brother killed in car wreck. Snapped and started a domestic terrorist organization which grew beyond his imagine. Wears mask to hide the fact a lot of people know him.

I liked the early comic origin. Even if some of it got a bit hokey as it went on. That said, in my play he never really had a backstory. He was much more like a Bond villain turned up to 11. Ruthless, brilliant, driven, and with the resources to pull it off. That's why it had to be the best of the best to take him on.
Even though he usually met defeat, he always got away, and always had more weapons and plans. He was almost more of a plot device in my play. The other cobra characters around I gave more personality to, and more traditional motivations. He was "The Commander". You didn't ask dare question him, his goals or his methods. He wanted to control that river (creek behind my house)to move weapons and contraband, that Mountain (giant snow bank at the end of the driveway) because there was rumored to be gold underneath it, that jungle (the woods on our property) for a spot to build a secret base to launch his diabolical plans from. As a member of Cobra you better make it happen. Or else.

I've had a hard time trying to make sense even of just OG comic CC.
He starts out as a used car man who starts a pyramid scheme to get back at the government like some hillbilly wacko. His organization is small time, but makes headways by hiring smart people like Destro, Dr. Venom, etc. to build it up. And that was cool. After he comes back from the "dead", though, the character basically goes over the top 90s style. Losing all of his allies, shooting his own people for the slightest reason, hand to hand combat with Snake-Eyes, unhappy controlling an actual country. CC started to feel like a caricature of his cartoon self only more dangerous. File card CC seemed like a totally different character from any version. He's some mysterious brilliant weapons developer who is super charismatic - like an evil Iron Man. |

As a kid I always lamented the lack of Bond action figures because I always wanted CC and Blofeld to interact. |

Keep the views coming guys, I am enjoying them. Yes there must be some mystery to him but if we were to suppose who and why that is what I like.
I also like reading how he fitted into your play back in the day and what your thoughts are on him now? He is a wrongen that's for sure |

Absolutely. ARAH was essentially Bond for GenX kids. There was certainly a lot of not written down to content in it, too. Even in the cartoon as silly as it got.

Here’s the way I envision Cobra Commander in my personal Joeverse:
Cobra Commander is cunning, shrewd, and unscrupulous. He is not ideologically driven, rather, he is motivated entirely by his own avarice. Beliefs, values, dogmas, and allegiances he regards as mere instruments; he can play them all, but he is taken in by none of them. Over the years, he has fought in numerous revolutionary armies in various parts of the world under manifold false identities. Like a snake, he sheds one skin and adopts another as it suits him. Prior to founding Cobra, he served as an officer in the Red Shadows militia. When the Shadows fell, he fled, taking with him many of the assets and connections he gathered over the course of his career. He then went underground, hiding from the authorities while building his own terrorist organization from the ground up. His underworld connections allowed him to gain the support of wealthy aristocrats like the Baroness and ambitious investors like Destro, while his sly sophistry and terrifying charisma amassed him a legion of fanatic followers. |

In my Joeverse, Cobra Commander was a rogue CIA officer who decided to go into business for himself and founded Cobra in the late 70s to enact regime changes, assassinations, and blackmail for fun and profit. He's as cold-blooded as the snake his organization is named after.
Even after the last Cobra remnants were snuffed out in 1994, the legacy of Cobra Commander would go on to inspire a whole generation of terrorist leaders. |
