I guess that is the essence of a cult or extremism that he probably can talk the talk and get the backing. But if he was just a car salesman why hide your face? No other Cobra member does. It cannot be simply so he can not be recognised in public. Surely someone of his ego would want people to recognise him and honour him etc. I still think he is a person of great influence ..... A Vice President or something alike???? |

I think wearing the mask serves two purposes: he is the most wanted/hunted man in the world, so of course he wants to stay anonymous.
But wearing a mask also makes him more than a man, it makes him a symbol. He becomes synonymous with his ideas and organization. He and Cobra are one and the same. Like Napoleon said "I am the revolution." Cobra Commander is very charismatic, he'd have to be to do what he does. He may be the most charismatic man in history. But he is also an ego maniac and the mask is a way to develop his own cult of personality without putting his true identity at risk. |

My favorite was always the one from the comic book in the 90's. The cartoon version was annoying as hell and I couldn't see how he was in charge of cobra. DDP did a awesome version of him when he wore a trench coat. That was cool. As far as his origins I thought the cartoon origin of him was stupid. I always had him as being a guy that was disillusioned and wanted to rule the world so started a organization and it kind of grew from that. Kind of like QAnon just not as dumb.

I'm more curious what was the appeal of fake Cobra Commander for hottie Baroness to give him sexy time.

Larry Hama?s take was the best. He was just a regular guy with a boring job and an older brother who was serving in Vietnam.
His brother returns home with deep psychological problems and ends up dying in a car accident. CC ends up blaming the federal government and takes up arms against them. |

The very early Marvel run, as others have pointed out, is the essence of what the character was supposed to have been: cunning and ruthless.
My guess is that the used car salesman concept was probably in Hama's head early on, but the influence from the cartoons drifted over into his writing- probably against his best attempts and intentions- and CC morphed into an incompetent windbag dolt. Snake-Eyes' involvement in CC's creation came along around issues #26/#27, so while it played out as "unrevealed" at the time, looking back at it now it really looks like Hama was starting to weave Snake-Eyes and the ninja salad throughout everything, and it was probably a bad writing choice. Could CC's brother have been killed in a car wreck by a family and made him anti-government? Sure. It fits. But having the family be SE's family? That's where the writing gets unnecessarily... not-clever. Like something M. Night Shamalan would have written. I absolutely hate to give credit to Rise of Cobra, but giving CC some military background prior to becoming disgruntled was probably was a good idea. It's reasonable to think that he would have had some background in either military to get the experience needed to operating a paramilitary organization. |

I rewatched renegades recently and enjoy their version of cobra as basically like umbrella Corp from resident evil.
Decobray is the reclusive ceo of this wonderful company that is in every facet of modern life but they are up to some shit behind closed doors. If you haven't watched it the story is pretty good. The animation is not my preference ut the story makes it worth a watch. Cc is pretty ruthless and does at one point engage in combat in the show. |

From reading the $1.99 collections of the old Marvel comics, I vaguely remember Cobra Commander somehow blaming Snake Eyes and hiring Zartan before he became Zartan to get revenge. I think that led to Zartan shooting the arrow at the Arashikage compound. I could be wrong.

It?s great to read the various stories Hamma put out here. Being from England I was not aware of these as our stories first ran in a comic named battle action force and then went into marvel with that background. Could Elon Musk be Cobra Commander? Just saying |

I kinda like the comics take that he was a working class schmuck who gets fed up by the daily indignities and injustices of working class life. He was smart enough, ruthless enough, ambitious enough to try and challenge the system and did so on a massive scale.
I mean the guy built and finaces an army that can hold its own against the most over-funded and powerful military in the world. He's like Lenin, Che, Tyler Durden, Lex Luthor and the Joker all rolled into one seriously dangerous maniac. But I also like to leave him with a mysterious and unknown origin, so in my world, the whole used car salesman origin is just the best guess of the military intelligence apparatus. It may or may not be true. Whatever the case, he is a true revolutionary and is only considered a bad guy until he wins, because we all know that "the winners write the history books." In his own mind, he is a hero fighting against oppression, exploitation, injustice and imperial aggression. COBRAAAAAAA !!! |
