It's interesting how the figures for Zandar and Zarana were made of the same color-changing plastic, yet were never depicted as having Zartan's abilities in any of the media. Also, they weren't referred to as Dreadnoks on their cardbacks.

Yeah, Zartan's definitely wearing a hood in the comics, as seen when he puts it on Ripcord in the story where they trade places after fighting on Cobra Island

I’d say bazooka in a bright red sports jersey supposedly as part of an elite special military unit just didn’t work with me. Didn’t get that one as a kid.

Well I guess I have to "pretend to not notice" Flash has a Laser Rifle.
The first ridiculous vehicle is likely for me the Chameleon (Swamp Skier). M.A.N.T.A. is a bit silly too. But some of the "dafter" things are also pretty iconic like Serpentor's Air Chariot or the Cobra Pogo for example. I think everyone will reluctantly admit how daft the HAVOC is.. even if they like it - it is a really impractical combat vehicle tha same goes for the Triple T. As for characters/figures ; Well Quick Kick's lack of footwear remains a concern. But one could say the same about the Trubble Bubbles too. I guess one way to judge daftness is would it actually work.. and I have some concerns about the Cobra Wolf or Ice Snake for example (getting stuck). There is plenty of Cobra weapons that you'd need to be wearing ear protection and fire resistant suit to even have a chance of surviving firing its weapons such as the IMP or the Adder or the Detonator or the Gi Joe ones such as R.P.V. Attack Cruiser, or any of the 'Battlefield robots' (Such as the Radar Rat). I like "Daft" Though such as the wildly impractical Mobile Battle Bunker. But it you make me pick I'd say the Ninja Raider vehicles are the "bridge to far" for me. |

The real background behind the figure is that Hasbro's plastic supplier showed them a demo of a new color-changing plastic, and they thought it was really cool and "toyetic," so they made a figure out of it. The challenge of creating a backstory to explain why the character would change colors is something neither the comic nor the cartoon ever really cracked to a satisfactory degree.
As for the head, on the toy it's clearly a hood. There's no question of that. The only reason this issue is ever debated is that the cartoon animation was insufficiently detailed and looked a little ambiguous - likely because the animators only had early design sketches to work from and misunderstood the intent. |
