So I have been thinking about this on a number of occasions through comments on different threads and now I ask you the question. What do you accept in your Joeverse which is different from reality?
Do your Joes age? - Mine do not. They have stayed the same age since 1982 Do Joes die? - Well I tend to ignore the comic stories mostly if a character dies. That doesn?t stop me using them. They may die in battles I have but they are fine by the next day. The only Joe I acknowledge to have died is General Flagg - you can?t name an aircraft carrier after a living guy right? Do laser guns exist? - Only with Flash for me. (I can?t talk about bright lime green sci-fi) the rest fire bullets. Do bullets or lasers hit targets? - Yes for me. Is there a place for brightly coloured soldiers uniforms on the battlefield? - For me No No and No again. What else is there that we accept or adapt? |

I don't play with the figures anymore... just display them, so I don't think too much, in terms of story, these days.
However, when I was a kid, I would usually just play on a day-to-day basis. I never had any long running story arcs. I would just play, people on both sides would die, and the next day, it would start all over again. As far as lasers vs bullets, I'm pretty sure I remember using both, even at the same time, from the same gun, when I was a kid. |

I don't really "play" with figures (though I suppose you could call setting up displays a form of playing) anymore but I do put a lot of thought into my own personal "Joe-verse" though it's an ever-changing thing.
1. The Aging thing is something I've hung up on a lot. On one hand I tend to despise settings where the characters never grow and change. But on the other you either have to set the Joes aside because they're all retired or have some contrived nonsense where every single Joe has an identical successor (if you want the Joes to maintain their history while still keeping the OG Characters around), or some fantasy-based reason as to why the Joes are semi-immortal. So yeah, I still haven't fully figured this one out. 2. Can they die? Yes. Do they die? Not often, and usually only if I don't have a figure of them or they're usually portrayed as dead in other lore. 3. Lasers exist but are generally relegated to specialty Joes and troopers that use them (Flash, Sci-Fi, Laser Vipers). Some weapons may be more "super tech" or have more exotic properties/ammunition depending on whether they look like a real gun or a sci-fi gun. 4. Bullets and lasers definitely hit targets. 5. Brightly colored uniforms pop up, mostly on the Cobra side, but they're not really the preference. |

I plan on getting into action figure photography and as a result my JOEverse is actually a JOE multiverse which is broken down into four categories which will be captured in the pictures.
Quasi real world military. This is the real that most resembles ours. In this reality the JOEs and COBRA Command use real world weapons. Hamaverse. The JOEs and COBRA mostly use real weapons, but specialists (e.g. Flash and some COBRAs) will use laser rifles. However laser weapons are experimental and are hella expensive. Sunbow. Everybody has Sunbow laser rifles and pistols. Modern Sunbow. Everybody is using the Nerf guns.

I don't play with my figures anymore has probably been 20yrs.
For aging I don't mind the idea but then again my head cannon doesn't rely on any of my ppl having been in the Vietnam War. Death is real but mostly it applies to figures I don't like enough to buy (I use this in other lines too, lol) I don't do lasers. Not because I don't think they can't fit but I'm a sucker for guns and have been for a long time so setting up loadouts is fun for me. What's the point of weapons if you can't hit the target? Not into bright colors in general. Cobra gets some leeway cause most of their aesthetic isn't practical anyway. For the most part though I don't think much of cobra forces do much in the way of marching or open warfare. The cobra forces that do have camouflage are firefly (espionage/sabotage) and environmental like snow serpents. I'm also not a ninja guy. Sure SE and SS are fine because if there are no other ninjas (or at least VERY few) they are unique and that is cool. If everyone is a ninja and there are large forces of ninja to me that isn't interesting. Those are just my preferences for my head cannon and I'm willing to make exceptions for cool figures. |

such great replies guys thank you. It is interesting that we still have to make it work in our heads whether you "play" with them or not.

Is that "playing?" I dunno. Probably about as close as most adults get. Last edited by Jmacq1; 03-03-2022 at 12:34 PM.. |

It is kind of interesting. I don't get my figures out and play out action scenes like I did when I was a kid, but I do still certainly imagine such scenes and storylines in my head, sometimes independently and sometimes as I'm devising/setting up displays.
