You know, I was thinking I don't have a "Joeverse," and I suppose I don't in a meaningful way, but I realize I do think about certain aspects of this in a more detailed way. I can have a hard time shutting my brain off for sleep, so I've developed a sort of trick to give my brain a thought excercise that occupies it, but is basically about something inconsequential so there's nothing to stress, worry or get super-interested in. One of the things I use is GI Joe.
For example, I'll think of Cobra's structure and what troop type fits where and how they're recruited or I'll think about Cobra itself and how scary-realistic it would be for a multi-national corporation to create a "security subsidiary" that provides security forces to nations and basically builds its own private army under the noses of the international community. Or I'll think about how Joe and Cobra vehicles would work in the real world if they're in the same relative scale as the toys. So I think about shit like that, but rarely do I think about stories or battles or whatever. I guess for me they're all stuck in my ageless, timeless childhood.

I find I write out intelligence reports or newspaper articles and it just adds to the fun for me. I have a disability these days and over the last few years I have mostly been confined to the house mostly in bed. This escape has been a great joy to me. |

From Destro's amulet he can secretly dispense hallucinogens that make one think his mask can move. It also makes one question whether he is wearing an under shirt, or if that is really his skin color.

Great topic!
For me, the Hama stuff is the "default setting" or "one true GI Joe"... up until about issue 50. After that, Hama's lack of interest or frustration began obvious, especially looking back at them now. The exception, of course, were the Special Missions issues, which reunited him with Herb Trimpe. Anything that's Hama & Trimpe is just magic. The early Marvel run and SM still hold up, 40 years on. As far as characters aging, I'm in that small group that prefers that they do. The tradeoff is that eventually, they all have to go or (as others have perfectly stated) have a science fiction explanation for their semi-immortality. If I had to set up a continuity, it would be Hama until issue 50, then anything goes after that, with characters aging out. Kamakura, the best creation from Devil's Due, could easily slid into the spot that Snake-Eyes held as the team's ninja bad ass. One reason I liked the New Sculpt era was the influx of new characters, in addition to updated designs for older characters. If the Joes aged in real time, few or none of them would still be on the team, I assume. The youngest members then would be in their very late 50's or early 60's now. So If GI Joe HAS to be Snake-Eyes, that's an issue. |

File cards come first.
Hama's stuff and FunPub's G.I. JOE Collector's Club comics are next. All of Hama's #155 1/2 and up stories are all 1995 to me. He has so many continuity glitches that this is the only way I can explain his current run. Third is Battle Action Force, Action Force Weekly, and G.I. JOE: European Missions, which are crazy good imho and can be squeezed in with some difficulty. Fourth is Sunbow (with Sgt. Savage) and DiC. Obviously, not a perfect fit, but the character portrayals by the voice actors are too rich to pass over. Sixth: Young adult novels and "Find Your Fate" series (only the successful outcomes... Heh!) Then, cut to DDP comics set in 2001 and 2002 where we, the readers, stay indefinitely for any future tales until 2011 and G.I JOE: Extreme takes over. Next, all entwined together (between 1964 to 2011): IDW comics, the other cartoons and CGI (Spy Troops, Valor vs. Venom, Ninja Wars, Sigma 6, Resolute, Renegades, G.I. JOE: Extreme, etc.), 3 movies and novels and comics (including "Operation: HISS web episodes and Panini comics)... Oh, and don't forget Action Man and the original G.I. JOE mini-comics from the '60s and '70s! They all fit somewhere. It's a busy universe! Last edited by seaneley; 03-04-2022 at 08:59 PM.. |

Do your Joes age? Nope. It is always like 1987 in my Joeverse.
Do Joes die? Rarely but yes. Do laser guns exist? Yes, but only with Flash, Sci-Fi, and the occasional other weapons (like Destro's pistol). I use the XMLR-3A (the one that came with Snow Job) as the L-88 general purpose machine gun, and it is the still the generic rifle used by my Joes like in the cartoon. Do bullets or lasers hit targets? Yes. Is there a place for brightly coloured soldiers uniforms on the battlefield? No, not really. What else is there that we accept or adapt? Duke, Scarlett, Flint, Lady Jaye, and especially Shipwreck cannot fly a Skystriker. I also don't think of the Joes having multiples of the same vehicle, but I waver on this.
