I have no doubt they did that too, but as I imagine it, the agency wanted to speed things along. Maybe they also wanted to trade AK-47s for captured AK-74s too, since US technical intelligence and anybody in the West wanting to learn Warsaw Pact weapons would like to get their hands on them, whereas the greater availability of ammo and spare parts for the AK-47 (or AKM) from local cottage industry and the international market might make the AK-47/AKM better for Mujahideen purposes.
But yeah, I?m sure they did use weapons captured directly from the Soviets as well. IMO the Destro story doesn?t clash with that. Better yet they could give us more than one option for the trooper: an AKM and an SVD. If I were to be a bit anal in terms of real world, I agree that an officer would not be carrying an SVD or maybe not even a fixed stock rifle. He should have an AKMS, a sidearm, or some kind of SMG or PDW. Last edited by CG Steve; 02-21-2022 at 08:02 PM.. |

That's what I was trying to say, give the trooper both the SVD & AK.

The Dragunov and Ak-47 weapons were swapped on the carded versions they displayed (see at the 1:19:43 mark) on the Pulse stream today. These images were initially up on Pulse too but have since been replaced with correct carded versions.

Hasbro gave the troopers the Dragunov sniper rifle and the officers the AK-47 or AKM.
A lot of people over the years have pointed out that you?d expect infantrymen to have assault rifles like the AK-47, and then your more highly trained soldiers serving as officers might have a more specialized weapon like a sniper rifle. So, a lot of people have argued that Hasbro?s assignment of weapons seems backwards, or (since the officer has the chest rig for more AK ammo) that Hasbro gave the right gun to the right figure but named the figures in a backwards way. Obviously anybody can think what they like, but the way I like to explain it is that early Cobra emphasized ambushes and terroristic assassinations rather than infantry operations. Given the size and capability of the US armed forces and the likelihood that many of Cobra?s potential recruits might be there primarily for the cruelty and opportunity for personal gain, rather than as philosophical ideologues or religious zealots willing to die for their beliefs, i think it does make a lot of sense that early Cobra had only a smaller number of hard core true believers who?d be willing to stand their ground in a pitched firefight with an AK. As far as the SKS, having those rifles in Cobra make sense (like maybe all the residents of Springfield get their own at a certain age or after a Cobra initiation?), but they weren?t a part of the original figure series. Same goes for RPGs.

I tend to buy third-party AKs and variations to gear up my troops with, whatever scale I'm collecting at the time. I do tend to keep Cobra Troopers using Soviet-era weaponry so a squad will have a few guys with AKs, one or two with SVDs, an Officer with an AKSU or similar, and somebody with an RPK (and maybe an RPG or grenade launcher guy too).
Vipers (of most stripes) get more modern/higher-tech/"sexier" weapons. Though with Classified and its' modernized aesthetic I may start to shift away from that pattern, we'll see. |

Even as a kid I thought it was weird. Regular Trooper should have had the AK, and I'd have given the Officer some kind of submachine gun (like a Skorpion, or some other Eastern Bloc weapon). Save the Dragunov for a specialized trooper, but it was the very first line, so they were probably just spitballing I suppose.
"One of the nameless, faceless legions of COBRA Command. Each COBRA is highly skilled in the use of explosives, all NATO and Warsaw Pact small arms, sabotage, and the martial arts. Qualified expert; Skorpion (VZOR61) Machine Pistol; Dragunov (SVD) Sniper's Rifle; Uzi Submachine Gun; M-16." Led me to believe as a kid that Cobra Troopers were more like sleeper agents than "Stormtroopers". I always thought they blended into society for the most part, but they all had a Cobra Trooper outfit in the closet. So in my Head canon the Cobra Troopers are the saboteurs, kidnappings, heists, etc etc "sleeper" agents and the Vipers are the combat troopers. And yes, I know the Crimson Guard took the "sleeper" agent role later. |

It's funny to watch the comic commercials for the Marvel comic now. At the very beginning, Cobra Commander and Destro were like, "LOOK! G.I. Joe has CAPTURED our Cobra Officer!" lol, like they just had 3 of them in the United States at the time.

That's interesting, I used to think Cobra tropers were like GIJoe greenshirts, except they were often townsfolk forced to work for Cobra.
Once they're under the influence of Cobra they move up to Vipers or other designated forces. |
