I sold off everything but 82-94 (and a few of those) Joe figures 10-14 years ago.
One thing that's really important for me and some others is the realization that I don't have to buy *everything* Joe related, or TF related, or whatever. It's important to come to terms with picking and choosing what you like, rather than trying to be a completist.

I had a period where money felt tight and the only way I could justify the expense for Classified was to sell my 25th and ME collection. I also want to control the physical footprint of the collection. Ultimately, this is a tiny portion of my life that serves as an escape and if it fails to remain within that criteria it is time to walk.

Post script...I don't regret selling the previous incarnation of the collection.

I sold most of my stuff in the huge window of nothing new. I mean, it was pretty dead for a few years. So I'll enjoy this run while it lasts, because classified won't be here forever. Something will happen, or change, then the focus will shift and GI Joe will be the red headed step child once again.
That's life though. All you can do is enjoy the run you have while you have it. Accept when it's over. Right now it's hot. It won't always be that way. I'm going to ride the high, and get out before the low. |

It's in the back of my mind for several reasons. Dwindling space at home. Seeing some of the more unpleasant segments of the fandom. The pandemic making the idea of wandering every Target/Walmart in the city seem less fun. I'm having trouble imagining what the "final straw" would be though.
I did take some time recently to take a hard look at my toy collection and drop off a couple of large boxes to Goodwill, it might be a good idea for me to do that more regularly. |

I think about this at times. I collect about thirty lines, and I am pretty much a completionist in all but a few. With Star Wars 4 inch, I have ended up buying five or six of each figure in the hopes of getting one mint one, and at times, I cannot return them. My basement is completely devoted to toys, and they are (much to the dismay of my wife) spilling up into the other areas of the house.
If someone came in and offered me a million for it all, I would likely do it. Then, I would use the yearly interest to rebuy what I really missed. I am stuck, though. It is a blinking contest with me and Hasbro now, and I intend to outlast them. I think I can retire in seven and a half more years. At that point, I think I may sell the house and open an action figure museum. I do not see any other options. |

No way -- I love this shit. I would never voluntarily participate in anything that made me feel stress instead of joy; I strive to maintain a realistic, healthy perspective in all my hobbies. I collect at least 20-30 different toy lines (vintage & modern) with varying levels of commitment, but if I don't like a particular piece or it is excessively overpriced, I don't buy it. If something is too difficult to obtain, I let it go. I am patient, resourceful, and shrewd, so I usually get most of what I want without undue frustration or getting hosed by corporations, scalpers, and resellers. I have worked hard but am also very fortunate to be financially secure with a stable career, and to own a home with ample space and a longtime paramour who appreciates and supports my interests. If I eventually run out of room, I will prioritize the stuff I like the most. If my financial situation ever unexpectedly deteriorates, I will sell stuff. Otherwise, I will stay forever engorging myself on that magnificent plastic crack and cherishing every moment of it.

I’m not ready to get out completely. I am at the point though where I’m 40 years old, and looking around going what am I going to to do with all of this stuff? I have a couple hobbies besides action figures, so in recent years I’ve tried to cut back and begin selling off things I’m never really going to do anything with besides leave in a box. I sold most of my modern era joes already, and have been moving some of the other things like diecasts. I still enjoy and display my vintage joes and MoTU origins stuff, so I’ll probably keep collecting those. I am being more selective though. Like Origins, I’m only buying figures that I had as a kid or ones I really wanted but never had. I’ve passed on a good number of those figures in recent months. I want thin the collection enough to where it’s not a huge burden on my family whenever I croak. I don’t have kids right now, and don’t see there being much interest in this stuff from anyone else after I’m gone. It’s not really something we like thinking about, but time flies, and no one lives forever. It seems like yesterday I was 20 years old and just getting into collecting toys I grew up on.

I have to say, if collecting is stressing someone out,it might be time to reconsider. Whatever you currently own is also a sunk cost. You might be able to sell it and make a profit, but really, new purchases should not be based on your past purchases. At least that is what an economist would say.
At times I have bought too much, but by and large, I only collect what I like. If it is GI Joe, Star Wars TVC, CFT etc, I get the figures I like and don't worry about getting the whole line. |
