I’ve thought about it. I’m currently enjoying the Classified series, but due to space limitations, I’m not army building. I’m still on the fence with the new o-ring line. I was into the modern era 2007-2018 Joes and I wasn’t asking for a new o-ring line. I backed the new Skystriker and ordered the Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow o-ring 2 pack, but I don’t know how deep I’ll dive into the 40th ARAH anniversary line.

Context: Was back reading posts on the O-ring thread and wanted to say something about the discussion that started on page 25. This thread is an effort to not derail that one and provide a place to discuss this topic, which in my opinion is a rather important/intriguing one. Also the reason I put this in General is because I feel like it has a lot to do with the hobby as a whole:
https://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-j...-order-25.html I've been feeling somewhat the same recently. I've been collecting GI Joe and action figures my entire life. I still have all my childhood Joes, even though they hardly see the light of day anymore thanks to their horrid condition. But recently I've started to care less and less. As SmokeBellew said its not about any type of "final straw", or Hasbro's fault. Its just that I'm feeling over it. Today I was browsing through my preorders and realizing just how many I have and at the same time asking my self "do I really care, do I want these?". And while the answer isn't no, its not yes either. I love action figures, to me they are more beautiful then any painting or sculpture. the tactile, robust, versatile nature of them have been my kryptonite for years. And this is not the first time I've ever thought like this. Normally when ever I think about selling or stopping I just box everything up for a few months, and see if I care. If I don't, I sell. If I give in and display everything again, well then I have my answer. Well recently I've been thinking about another box up. For the Joes that is. Other lines have to go period. Funny thing is that only 2 franchises have ever been able to keep my interest. Gi Joe and Warhammer 40k. My love for these 2 franchises will fluctuate, but I think they will always be my bread and butter. However lines like star wars can be interesting for a time, but they always die out. Selling is somewhat of a daunting task though. I need to get better lighting, camera, and find the time to do it. And what would I do if I do sell the Joes? I'd like to have some sort of hobby to keep my interest. Its better then watching TV. And hobby's like shooting, and ATVs, can get really expensive. However as soon as I post this I'm going to find something interesting, a figure a custom who knows. Sometimes I think that I'm bipolar lol. But as we have discussed multiple times on this board, we all do that. So my question to you is: Have you ever thought about quitting GI Joe and figures all together? Or do you just want a break sometimes? Over the last 2 years ME figures. O-Rings went when I started collecting ME when the 25th Anniversary started. All my the stuff was in boxes. That's a waste. Especially for GREAT toys. I was NEVER going to display them. So I let them go. Made bank. You absolutely do not need to get "new lighting" and all that. Take your pics against a white background in an area with controllable natural light. Clean static pics work very very well. It is not complicated. Do not make it so. My advice? Sell what you don't want, man. If you can't say,"Hell naw! That shit is awesome I ain't selling!" then get rid of it. It's a GREAT time to sell. MAKE MONEY. Don't need the money? Save the money. Yes. Selling IS daunting at first but, once you make the decision to actually sell it's easy. Making a decision and getting up can be the toughest part of any project. Just take it a step at a time. You'll gain momentum as you go. I have sold about 1/2 of my overall toy collection in the last few years. The vast majority of it was in boxes. Why keep it? What am I EVER going to do with it? It made no sense to me anymore. It's actually been a very cathartic experience. I've made close to $16,000 already. My stuff wasn't ANYWHERE near as valuable as a lot of these cats. I sell things in lots. I don't act like it's made of pure gold. If I bought it cheap or at retail I could afford to undercut the competition. Get to it my man!

I've had little phases before, purging impulse buys, mostly Marvel Legends or Star Wars stuff I just came across at the store and thought "Yeah, I like this". I'll purge figures and some statues (sold all my mini-busts and didn't look back), then some new stuff will hit pre-order and I'm glad I didn't go TOO minimalist.
But I notice that some items, mostly items that got me back into collecting in 2012, NEVER get sold: recarded 1984 Baroness and Firefly, certain Joe comics, the #21 Comic Pack with 3 figures, Cobra Ninja Strike set, carded Alley Viper and Crystal Ball, etc. So, I know the love and passion is still there, I just really have to decide if it's something I want, or if I'm just buying / pre-ordering because it's new and shiny, and I'm afraid it will be gone in 20 minutes... |

I go in cycles. As a child, I collected Joe almost exclusively. When Episode I came out, I jumped on Power of the Force. My Joes were mostly boxed up by that point, but I would not have dreamed of selling them then. I collected EVERYTHING Star Wars 1:18 up until Episode II, and I hated AOTC so much, I stopped. A short time later, I had that crisis and sold all of my Star Wars stuff. I collected stuff here and there until 25th came out, and then I was fully back in Joe. I traded most of my ARAH for ME figures, to feel better about going whole hog. Black Series came along, and I was hesitant to make the leap to 1:12, but those first 4 figs were so beautiful. I told myself I would only get the best figures and characters. I failed. I got everything. When ME ended, I boxed up my Joe stuff. I recently began selling off all of my Black Series stuff. When Classified hit, I began liquidating my ME stuff (still have a little left to go). I again told myself I would be selective with Classified and again failed. I don't have everything, but I have everything I can find. I recently began collecting AEW figures, my first foray into wrestling toys. So I'm doing only that and Classified and already I'm considering getting out of Classified. So for me, I don't think I'll ever stop, but I try to never have more than two lines going at a time.

I feel like after several more purchases, Hasbro will really need to impress in order for me to buy more. As is, I'm not buying everything, but am open to most of Hasbro's scales.

Yes. I am downsizing right now. At the end of the day as a adult it is your choice to say im done or not. If you cant then it is more than collecting and you might have a problem.

My wife would love for me to sell everything. I've got most of my stuff from childhood. Sold my Jonny West to buy Star Wars. Sold my Weables to buy Gi Joe. Sold my Transformers for, well you see. But I kept my Adventure People and all the other 3 3/4 lines. I can't park my car in the garage do to my boxed up collection.
My packrat self has convinced my cheep ass self that if I sold anything, in a few years I'd want to by it back. My collection is a blessing and a burden that I bare every day. I love the thrill of finding and buying. Then the regret of I'll probably not ever do anything with it again. I always think, when I retire, I set this stuff up right. But that's along time away. Maybe if I win the Powerball! Ha! |

When I got back into Joe's in 2008 with the 25th line, I made the decision that 1/18 scale ME figures is all that I would collect. This changed to only focus on POC quality figures after 2011.
I have slowed down significantly, now that ME figures are no longer available. Most of my toy money last year went towards MTF Vietnam, and the Roboskull. I am not out of collecting, but I've found that keeping it limited to only what you like will keep it somewhat grounded.

I'm trying to decide if I want to drop a line. Currently, I'm collecting SW Black, Marvel Legends BAF, GI Joe Classified, GI Joe 1:18, and Down to the last few things of Vintage Joes 82-90. I also have a "pile to sell" that takes up about half of a room. I try to be a completist, and with all the various store exclusives, it's become almost too much to keep track of and find. Need to do the same with the comic collection and cut back on the new releases. Sometimes I do just want to walk away from it all and do the Bruce Banner Sad Hulk 80's TV Show Music Disappearing Act. If you aren't getting joy from it, I would box it up for 6 months or so and then revisit it. If it doesn't do anythign for you then, then sell it. |
