40 here. Don't remember if I started in 85 or 86, my first three were Bazooka, Alpine, and Footloose, all were available in both years. We didn't have a lot of extra money growing up, so my collection never got very big with new stuff, but my mom loved yard sales and flea markets. While my best friend got the FLAGG and Defiant, I got the 83 Headquarters (w/box until it got destroyed in a flood in 98) and several 82 & 83 figures (only Clutch survived intact). The cartoon was life, just the right mix of action and adventure. Not all of my friends loved Joe, but almost everyone had at least some, you couldn't escape it!
A big part of my excitement for the RetrO-ring collection is getting figures "as I remember them" that were out of stores when I began collecting or I had to pass on because I could only get 2-3 per year. |

A few years ago I went through yojoe's catalogue year-by-year and recorded each of the figures I had as a kid. My goal was to figure out which years I got the MOST figures. It was a surprisingly short burst of years. Clearly my obsessiveness with the toyline and brand lasted way longer than my parent's willingness to part with cash to support my habit. Also I was spending my money on the comics more than the toys. ---------- 1987 figures I had 11 of. Blowtorch might have come from this year too as it was his discontinuation year. 1987 - 11 figures 1988 - 7 figures, two vehicles (+ Super Trooper) 1989 - 7 (9) figures, two vehicles + drivers 1990 - 3 figures new, some trades later 1991 - 4 figures 1992 - 5 figures 1993 - 2 figures 1994 - only Joe Colton and Action Sailor Not as epic as my memories would suggest, especially since I now own at least 300 figures if not 400 or more. But, I often forget what I have now. I think I want to sell most of it. From 1990 through 1992 I had access to hundreds of GiJoes from my neighbor. He had all those later-year figures. He was a very spoiled kid from a very poor family. His single mom (I suspect) basically only paid rent and bought top ramen and GiJoes. He was completely out of control, but a good friend. By 1994 I was drinking and having sex but my obsession with GiJoe never went away. I didn't even have a lull in interest, just a lull in spending. But when I was 7 to 9 is clearly my boom years for physically buying figures as a kid (receiving them from parents, clearly). I started obsessively buying them again in my mid-20s, and then again in my early 30s. It comes and goes in waves.
