Topic, if you've been collecting for years or decades, when did you take breaks either because of economic factors, interest, personal issues, etc.
Personally, 1988-1995 they were just toys for me, but I kept everything I owned even though it was in poor condition, with lots of lost or broken pieces, Star Brigades were the last Joes I got from discount stores 1995-2003 I got into Star Wars POTF2, DC superheroes, Nintendo, & other miscellaneous new interests, didn't know of or notice JvC 2004-2008 collected the bulk of my collection because of how sturdy/realistic the vehicles were, went to my first Joe con in 2004 to the showroom but went to the whole con in 2006, picked up 2003 figures from KB Toys, collected everything I could from VvV especially the comic 3ppk sets, got into the first few waves of the 25th but started to slow down in the last few waves of 2008 comic packs, TRU exclusives, Club merchandise because of college 2009 I got into the first few waves of ROC exclusively, buying every one of the single cards figures I could & the smaller vehicles from the film, didn't get 25th or Club offerings 2010-2011 were two of the years I got into other hobbies, ROC Doc is the only figure I got then, picked up the BBTS Nok 7pk cause Road Pigs one of my favorites 2012-2013 was the end of college & my serious relationship so started buying everything I could from POC/230th from CVS or Walgreens, picked up lots of Retaliation's single figures with some of the medium size vehicles especially the improved figures like Jinx or Flint 2014 the only thing I got was the LJ/Baroness 2pk & bought one of the rafts from the NLC set 2015-2020 was my longest hiatus because of the limited product 2020-onwards I saw the ME Retro collection in Wal-Marts while I felt they were downgrades with some figures but upgrades with others I bought everything in-store or online, picked up Classified SE:O Scarlett in Dec. 2021 because it was on sale for $10.99...with the end of the Retro line I decided to collect Classified |

I started becoming a collector last year. My prior experience with toys as a kid was roughly '87-'91.

I only dropped out after the last wave in '94, which coincided with me "aging out", and then happened upon the RAHC in Walmart back in '00 and haven't looked back. I've had to clear collections out a time or two when finances got tight (both post '08 and literally right before the pandemic hit), but I managed to bounce back each time and rebuilding the collection was always the first priority when I did. My current o-ring collection is the best it's ever been, at nearly 600 figures.

1977 - 1985 Was Star Wars for me.
Christmas of 1982 I got my first Joes Around 1986 I started drifting away from it. Girls, sports, work, etc. I was too 'old' to collect toys. In 1990, a friend and I discovered they were starting to make new versions of the old GIJoe characters - and we became obsessed. 1995, Switched back to Star Wars again - as everyone else did. 1999 - Phantom Menace! Collecting was at it peak. After Attack of the Clones, I got back into GIJoe - as Joe vs Cobra ramped up. Have not stopped since. |

I didn't collect from 1994 until 2000. Although I did pick up maybe like three figures at a flea market during the interim. One of which was a v1 Firefly, which I had searched for for years. That's a story in itself. Getting him was bittersweet because I was no longer collecting at the time. I still have him and the backpack my friend gave me who was aiding me in my quest to find one.
Then I went on another hiatus from 2001 until 2004. I collected the Real American Hero Collection but stopped after getting a few Valor Vs Venom packs. Then I stopped for about a year before the 25th Anniversary line. Then I stopped in 2016 and didn't resume until 2020. |

Let’s see: aged out of toys in my youth around 1987-88. High school, etc.
1995-had a good job and a lot of disposable income. A friend/coworker of mine was a massive Star Wars fan(dad worked at Kenner and had saved a full set of toys for him packaged and mint). When the new figures hit, I started collecting them, as well as Spawn and some Marvel. Tried to keep up with it, but job instability and addictions slowed me down considerably. Around 2003 I sold it. Come around 2006 or so, I saw a Cybertron deluxe class Optimus Prime on the pegs. Bought it will on a whim. Suddenly I have several hundred Transformers and am attending a Botcon with the Primus package. That lasted until 2010 when I lost another job. Sold that and made a fortune. In 2012, saw Lego set #7965(Millenium Falcon) at the local Lego store. Bought that on a whim. Started collecting Star Wars, DC, and Marvel sets after that and had a collection of over 75000 pieces and many large sets. In 2018, decided to sell it to obtain a down payment on my house. In 2020, a friend of my brother’s gave him a boxful of his old toys. In it was many joes and Star Wars figures. It had a complete Baroness and v2 Storm Shadow, which I asked if I could have. Had them on my desk at work until the pandemic hit and I started working from home. Decided to buy a Battle Armor CC and a Hiss Tank. Suddenly I have a vintage collection of 300 figures and 76 vehicles. Decided it was too cluttered looking and sold that. Now I’m trying to have a more “professional collection” of sixth scale GI Joe and Star Wars and giant Transformer combiners. So basically I’ve been back and forth for over 25 years. I don’t know if it’s good or bad, but it makes me happy. |

Collected 82-90 as a kid through high school.
Worked stocking toys at Target and at TRU through college, but didn't pick up JVC or Valor Vs. Venom. Missed a chance to buy the Defiant back then. It would have taken more than a whole paycheck at $3.35/hr. Started up again after college when the comic packs and TRU exclusives started coming out. Back to collecting vintage again by getting a U.S.S. Flagg for myself as a reward for getting my master's degree. Then the 25th 5 packs came out and it was all over. I've been back in ever since, trying to get a complete vintage collection from 82-90 and most if not all of the new stuff and classified. |

I was surprised to realize in a previous thread that I only got 2 1993 figures and no 1994 ones. So, I took a break from '93-2000. After that there wasn't a year that "small" Joes were out that I didn't buy at least one. Though money was tight for 2004-2008, so I passed on some I regret.

If I'm not mistaken, there was nothing new being produced outside of the Collector's Club from 2017-2020 until the Retro line
