I agree with all of that. To add to it, I see very little ever discussed on toy message boards around the laws regarding selling products to children. It's heavily regulated now, and it was the wild west back then. You could sell anything you want to anyone.
I also wanted to add that Barbie's popularity has been waning rapidly since 2009. Nothing lasts forever. Quote:
These days, the best way to market directly to kids without actually "advertising" to them is to send a bunch of free toys/merchandise to popular YouTubers and they just record themselves opening it and playing with it. I remember my kids watching some kid and his dad(?) playing with Jurassic toys a number of years ago. That's the new glorified commercial.
I see it happen on Instagram too but it always rubs me the wrong way because it's just very awkward to watch an upperclass mom and her kids open a bunch of free toys in their fancy house and say "Thanks, Hasbro!"

I think Joe is failing with the younger generation because the younger generation has changed and doesn't want GI Joe. It doesn't fill any niche that isn't already filled by something else that is marketed better.
Also, they have no good tie-ins with other media. As mentioned by nearly everyone else, there is no cartoon. I don't think this matters as much nowadays. Kids that are interested in getting their parents to spend money, aren't really shelling out for the cartoon stuff. What exactly is on the toy shelf now that has cartoon tie ins? Most cartoon related toys are for the toddler crowd. Not exactly the demographic Hasbro would try to shill Joes on. Their movies failed to capture new audiences, even with Dwayne Johnson coming in to beef up the sequel. I think there's too many of us out there voicing our opinions about how we want the line to be to make it any good. The majority of the people buying Joes is are nostalgic nerds like us. Unfortunately, they are telling Hasbro that if they keep reselling them the same thing over and over, they will continue to buy it. SO, Hasbro sees no need for growth or evolution. They just continue on giving us the same old (literally) same old. Until Hasbro can evolve the line, it's not gonna catch kids' attentions. It's just that army toy their dad's played with 100 years ago. You know, the same thing we thought about those 12 inch Joes our dads had when RAH was first introduced. |

Kids don’t play with toys anymore…. Bottom line. They go from pacifiers straight to iPhones…

Probably because I was a poor kid who Corporate America couldn't give half a shit about. Still, ain't nobody gonna desire a toy they see a bunch of ghetto and shelter kids playing with. That just goes against our manufactured sense of nobile upward mobility. The only shit worth owning is the shit rich people say we should own, don'chaknow.

This is what I noticed with my oldest nephew and niece. They kind of went from 6-8 year old toys right to iPads, Playstation, pretty much electronics. The exception is my youngest nephew. Back when The Mandalorian season one came out, he was a huge fan. Of course the Black Series figure was sold out everywhere but I was able to order him one at retail when Amazon had a restock. It was his first Black Series figure and it got him hooked on them. He now buys them with money he saves up and I send him a few every now and then. He's the only kid I know that collects action figures.

Been thinking about this. Maybe the problem with the creative team behind GI Joe is that none of them are veterans. I don't know if they are or not, correct me if you know more about them. The team that we grew up with were, including Hama. They put their life experiences into the product and it showed. The new team does not have feeling of service and knowing that they are part of something bigger than themselves. As the saying goes, write what you know.
I can hear you say, what about sci-fi, no one has fought aliens? No, but the good sci-fi is about something else. The space war is just a smoke screen for a bigger meaning. What about research and imagination. That goes only so far without feeling hollow and fake. I for one could not write about the military because I was never apart of it. Without this personal reference, we'll never have anything like we had before with the Joe's. I still could be wrong. |

I would argue that the bubble really started to recede in the late 2000s, in large part because of the rise of the dominance of the collector and the fracturing of product lines. I readily agree with everything else you said, though!

No Sears catalog pics of the diorama pics. As a kid, those got me excited and wanting them.
