Cartoons are really what got us hooked on the toys, as kids in the 80s, but there isn't a G.I. Joe cartoon, currently. Also, movies and video games help (look at the popularity of the MCU and Fortnite). G.I. Joe would need a compelling cartoon, to hook the youngest demographic, and then a great movie/video game franchise to hook the demographic of anyone who didn't grow up in the 80s.

New cartoon, with completely new team.
Figures with good articulation can be made inexpensively. I'd say go an 80' s route. Release individual figures with minimal accessories, further accessories come in packs. These days, a video game is a must. And Hasbro needs to promote the hell out of it. |

i've never been patriotic.
i wasnt a patriotic kid. none of the kids i played gijoe with were patriotic. we liked the figures and the cartoon. my favorite gijoe is chuckles. he's not even a traditional military character. the last "military" gijoes i customized were 17 years ago. the problem is hasbro. they've been blundering gijoe since 1994. just when they bring it back they change their mind. the last time things were awesome were the o-ring 6 packs; then they moved on to the "modern sculpt" whatever, and then that was it for a while until hasbro decided they didnt want to do it anymore. today's problem is a movie that was no good, with figures that dont scale with what people who collect hte line already have. - after making movies that were also no good. the "retro" figures were just reissue of modern sculpt trash that arent that far off from the last time they were sold. they're just now bringing back o-ring figures, but are setting it up to fail. which is another problem hasbro has. they set things up for failure. hasbro likes saying "i guess people dont want______" when they make very little effort to put product out there for people to buy - be it limited quantity, store exclusive, cancelled product, poor distribution, and unpopular characters over ones people have been asking for. a snake eyes/storm shadow 2 pack will sell at walmart from plebes. it will not sell as successfully at a hasbro online store. you all know about it because you're on top of all the news for gijoe. would i want a snake eyes/storm shadow 2 pack? no. i have enough of them and i dont even like them. im tired of snake eyes/storm shadow. just as im tired of duke. there are hundreds of other joes to pull from. i also dont want a 400$ jet i never wanted to invest in a line hasbro likely doesnt actually want to pursue. i would totally buy a few outbacks, tunnel rats, and scarletts. that's just off the top of my head because i use a lot of their parts. joe slackjaw that doesnt play with toys anymore doesnt know about a hasbro store website, he knows what's at walmart. if he doesnt see it at walmart it doesnt exist. he's also not going to drop 200-400 dollars for a sky striker on a hasbro kickstarter. if hasbro put effort into it, they'd have a plan for that 2 pack to be on the shelves. so much so that people are sick of looking at it. full rows of pegs. multiple cases shipped per store. their retro line? ive seen 8 single figures within the last year. "but the shipping crisis!" it doesnt matter that they're delays. what matters is when product does show up it's hardly anything to sell. and ulitmately, hasbro doesnt want to sell 3.75-4" figures anymore. which is why star wars vintage collection has become it's red headed step child. it makes more on 6"+ figures for the same if not less amount of effort. but god damn, what a world that would be if hasbro had the forethought to sell star wars, gijoe, and marvel figures in two different scales at the same time. just rescaling the same model so collectors can buy the scale they want - and they make a real effort to put it on store shelves. |

I agree with all the above. When my son was 5,I tried to get him into Joe. Pok?mon won. He's now 26. Still a Pok?mon fan. My 14 year Olds friends didn't even watch the movies. Could careless. They play Fortnite, and refused to buy the Snake Eyes skin, because he was boring. My niece works at a daycare, the kids never even heard of GI Joe. Hasbro has a problem, but I don't know if they are willing to really change.

Star Wars captured youth with The Clone Wars, Rebels, and now Bad Batch.
Star Trek is currently capturing youth with the excellent Prodigy series on Paramount+ |

There's plenty of people like me who got into GIJoe in the 80's without the cartoons or comics, I think more collaborations with video games would be very helpful. If you go into the toy depts right now, half of the toys come from video games with multiple pricing options for everyone.

This actually brings up a good point though, when was the last time Hasbro marketing was good at anything at all? for Marvel and SW, Disney is doing all the legwork. Magic the Gathering is an economy completely run by adults and has been long before they acquired it. They did nothing for D&D. It became more popular because people started discovering it on their own as a result of pop culture references and 80s nostalgia shows like Freaks & Geeks, Stranger things, or from Community. Even Transformers is being carried by Gundam popularity. It's a much easier sell.
The bigger picture is that it feels like they think social media will magically make things sell, and that's all the effort they need to put in. The more I think about it, the clearer it is that Hasbro's marketing department(s) really, REALLY suck. |

While I agree with some points made herein, I'd add that kids have more interests, more options, and schools keep them busier than they did "way back when." I don't sense that Hasbro or IDW is excited about G.I. Joe, but they can make gobs of money off those of us who supported it in the heyday and put that money into the products they want to be about. Toys & Comics companies aren't uneducated. They know how to market to kids and engage them. I don't think the Joes fit their plan so kids don't take notice unless we show them.

A lot of the toys my kids like are based on popular video games rather than cartoons. It's not the 80s anymore. I think adding Snake Eyes to Fortnite was a step in the right direction but look how freaking long it is taking them to release the Snake Eyes Fortnite figure. GI JOE characters could probably get more popular with that type of exposure but Hasbro needs to do a better job bringing it all together and capitalizing on short-term exposure. You can't add a character to Fortnite then release that version of the figure 1.5 years later. Haha. The kids have moved on.
