I’d love to see more about Mercer defecting from Cobra.
The guy was a former Cobra Viper. There would be so much distrust towards within G.I. Joe and tension towards Mercer. |

Perhaps that story could also reconcile Felix Stratton and Richard Cecil- who are both codenamed Mercer and both the only people to defect from Cobra and live, per their file cards, I believe.

As far as I go, well I only started getting back into GI Joe a few years ago. Still my mind can't help but race back to the Specialist Trakker figure from the 2008 "Modern" line. His existence showed the possibility of M.A.S.K. existing in the world of GI Joe. According to his file card V.E.N.O.M. also is around in the Joe Verse. Shame to my knowledge he was the only M.A.S.K. reference we got with this figure. I regret selling him cause he was one of my favorite and if I remember correctly he was highly sought after as well because of the cross over potential. Another thing to note as you can see on his file card, his primary specialty is a vehicle designer. That makes you wonder if maybe he had a hand in making some of the Joe vehicles which is totally plausible in my book.

Hasbro's mishandling of the Oktober Guard:
When I was young, my favorite adversary for G.I. Joe was the Oktober Guard, introduced by Marvel Comics in December 1982 with G.I. Joe A Real American Hero issue number 6. From that day on, I could hardly wait until Hasbro released the action figures of that Soviet team. But no, Hasbro waits almost nine years before making a new, not-Colonel Brekhov character named Red Star, and introduces him October 1990 with the first season of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero animated series by DIC Enterprises in which that character is a member of the G.I. Joe team? Why?!? Then in 1991 Hasbro releases the first Oktober Guard action figure, and it is Red Star. Larry Hama wrote a great file card for him, possibly not knowing that he would be a G.I. Joe team member, and that is why there is no mention of him helping the G.I. Joe team. The factory gave him a red card back on the front, and a Cobra emblem on his file card, to indicate he is an enemy of G.I. Joe. Confusion begins. Hasbro begins to cover the Cobra emblem with a blue G.I. Joe sticker, and least for a while until they could change to cardback to blue and create a G.I. Joe emblem for the file card. Meanwhile, the referendum, an attempted coup, and the dissolution of the Soviet government is playing out on the world stage for all to see. Hasbro doubles down and introduces a second season of the animated series with another Oktober Guard Anti-Armor Specialist named Big Bear in season two. An action figure is made, on a blue cardback, and even the file card mentions that he drives the G.I. Joe Attack Cruiser and Badger vehicles. So, in 1991 while Ukraine asserts its independence, Hasbro releases a Ukrainian character as the leader of the Oktober Guard, saying the members of the Soviet Army are good guys and welcome members of the G.I. Joe team while they are at their most dangerously unstable period in their history. Yikes! Talk about lousy timing. I just try to ignore the idea that the Soviets ever belonged on the G.I. Joe team. Canada, United Kingdom, and Australia... not a problem in my mind, but the Red Army?! Give me a break!

That never made much sense to me either. The Oktober Guard was a great concept as the sort of anti-Joes. Obviously the differing goals of their respective governments would have them at odds most of the time, but I always loved stories where they gained/showed mutual respect for each other as soldiers, but never allies.

There are more Oktober Guard members we never see for some reason was probably a big head-canon assumption of mine as a kid.
Like, the USSR/Warsaw Pact only managed to put together a team of Brekhov, Schrage, Stormavik, Daina, Horror-Show and Dragonsky? Where's the Polish, Hungarian and Bulgarian members at least? |

I wouldn't mind seeing more individual trooper characters, with names and fleshed out backgrounds, make an appearance. Similar to how they treated the SAW Viper. It would be interesting to see a normally faceless Cobra trooper get a more developed character.

I know we all have Classified want lists a mile long, but I would really love if they sprinkled in some brand new characters here and there, and I think a previously-unseen member of the Oktober Guard would be something they could A) knock out of the park design-wise and B) be accepted by most Joe fans. Of course, given the state of world affairs, anything Russian might be too toxic to touch at the moment, but one can dream, right?
