I have only read a handful of IDW comics, but I thought the DDP run was pretty good overall. The first few arcs are a big influence on my joeverse, including the decision to base my reinstatement "modern" era around 2000-01.

I've been mulling over this point a bit today and I think it ultimately shows a lack of imagination on Hasbro's part. Captain America in particular - and to a lesser extent the entire MCU - is pretty darn USA-centric yet Marvel/Disney still managed to turn that IP into a money-printing empire that appeals to all sorts of folks across geographies and ideologies. Few studios have been able to replicate the box-office-to-streaming dominance of Disney/Marvel though many have certainly tried, so I wouldn't consider that the goalpost for Hasbro to measure the success of GI Joe against. But it is a good example of taking a bit of IP and building something successful off of good, compelling stories that leverage its core strengths and unique characteristics rather than shying away from them. They've reinterpreted some characters (Mandarin in Iron Man 3 or the Ancient One in Dr. Strange) or themes along the way, and while we may not all agree on if those changes were good or not, it's hard to argue with the overall results (growing up a Marvel Comics kid I never could have imagined seeing something as sprawling and culturally dominant as the MCU). I think a much better parallel for GI Joe is Game of Thrones, which sort of came out of nowhere with an expensive high fantasy story that nobody was sure would work in 2011. The closest HBO had gotten at the time was Rome and that was canceled halfway through its second season. GI Joe shouldn't try to be GoT, but Hasbro should take notes on what GoT did well: lots of complex characters with compelling - and often conflicting - motivations; supporting characters that do a hell of a lot with relatively little screentime; a story that's both fantastical and grounded, and full of surprises; and a setting that felt unlike anything else on TV. Lastly, tons of successful directors and show-runners these days are my age, and I guarantee some of them grew up huge joe fans. Just like everyone wants to be in Star Wars even in a bit part, there's got to be some Jon Watts / Ryan Coogler / David Lowery out there whose dream project is to make their childhood GI Joe battles come to life. tl;dr - I'm convinced GI Joe could work and be hugely successful while fully embracing its setting, style, and characters, but they've got to give it to someone who gives a shit and let them cook. I think the bad guys being overwhelmingly more popular and recognizable than the good guys is the bulk of the issue Joe faces. What probably needs to be done is a shift to something like X-Men, with Cobra Commander having motivations and a position similar to Magneto. Let individual Cobras be the heroes for once, especially since they have so many independent operators. The X-Men were doing the "right thing" most of the time (like the Joes would), but having the Joes question their place in the grand scheme of things would never hurt the depth of the storytelling. All good points, but this is just a slice of the whole identity problem.

I know a lot of folks like Cobra being just a totem for evil / greedy / fascist / fill-in-your-favorite-bad-thing but I don't personally consider that a strength of the brand and would really welcome a reinterpretation of Cobra that casts CC, Baroness, and the whole organization in a more complicated light. That doesn't mean make them the good guys per se, just make them interesting. Using the GoT example, Jaime and Cersei Lannister are like the gold standard for this, but there's plenty of other examples in pop culture that aren't as much of a slow build. A totally different example (and not at all one that I think GI Joe should copy in terms of content or tone) is The Wire, where everyone is flawed, and it's hard to know who the good guys even are because the whole system is just so fucked.

I would like to see completely new material using filecards as a springboard. I'd love it if Hama would stay on to worldbuild, as that's his strong suit and I think he did it really well. Just leave the characterization, dialog, and pacing to other people.

I was using this list. Just the act of jumping between titles is annoying and jarring. Each has a very different tone and feel like their own universe. IDW jumped the shark right out of the gate.
