Whether it was a little Cobra guard tower or something that was released back in the 1980s, what do you think what was one or a couple of odd mini playsets for G.I. joe?

the JUMP. The bivouac, the ammo dump, all of the stupid motorised action pack things apart from the helicopter.

In hindsight, a lot of the mini-playset stuff doesn't make a lot of sense for GI Joe. Things like the Watchtower, Checkpoint Alpha, FLAK, etc... etc... Not taking away from how cool they are or fun to play with, but a highly mobile special operations force is not the type of thing where you're setting up a lot of semi-permanent structures and heavy artillery emplacements or bringing Tanks along.
But that's always been the big disconnect with GI Joe. They're a relatively small joint special ops force that has their own organic aviation, artillery, armor, etc...arguably even their own aircraft carrier. So they end up looking like a conventional military force more so than what you'd expect from a typical special operations force that tends to "travel lighter" and just "borrow" from other units that support them with the heavier stuff as-needed. Basically, the fiction says "special ops" but the toys (at least through '85 or so) say "Conventional military." But there IS one "mini-playset" that to my mind is the absolute most incredibly nonsensical thing created for either GI Joe or Cobra: The Cobra Battle Barge https://www.yojoe.com/vehicles/88/battlebarge/ Aka "Cobra's ultimate punishment detail." These things float in shark infested tropical waters around Cobra Island, their inhabitants presumably getting their family jewels microwaved by the giant radar dish they're gathered around while their brains bake from heatstroke, so that they can take pot shots at passing ships or aircraft with the comparatively tiny pea-shooters their listless "boat" is equipped with. |

Ah yes, the Coastal Defender. You can see it written on Falcon's face: "I went through Special Forces Selection so that I could man an armed portajohn?"
That's pretty much the Joe-side Battle Barge, too: "Just sit here until you see a Cobra boat out there, and then *BAM* drop the walls and fire your missiles! They'll never see you coming!" "What if there are more than four boats? Or I miss?" "Oh well then you're pretty much screwed...." Though at least it's slightly less likely to kill the operator than the RPV likely would be.... I guess there's a reason Hardball almost never shows up in any of the adaptations....

Most useless playset? The Cobra Rifle Range. Cobra forces obviously never used it.
The weirdest? Definitely this thing. |

The Battle Barge is awful lol... imagine being stuck out on that thing without even a roof, Gulf of Mexico sun beating down on you all day, no fridge, no toilet, no radio, just waiting to get hit by a G.I. Joe cruise missile.

I love all the early small play sets. I dipped out before things got too weird, but the one that always puzzled me was the Cobra Rifle Range. Like I get that it?s legit something Cobra needs to have as part of their garrisons, but it?s almost as bad as a ?Field Mess? set. Like, ?Awesome!! Cobra Commander?s got Scrapiron pulling KP duty again!?.
