Is there an article that discusses the compositions of Cobra's army?
For example: if Cobra Commander held a rally for 1000 Cobra members, about what percentage are Cobra Troopers? What percentage are Vipers? Of the Vipers what percentage are specialists? What percentage are Crimson Guard? Are the Dreadnoks and Iron Grenadiers allowed to attend? What's the composition of the Baroness' or the Crimson Twins security detail? Does every high command officer get assigned a crimson Guard? |

Given the apparently tens of thousands of Cobra troops, Cobra Commander could hold a rally for a thousand troops and have whomever he wanted turn up.

What kinds of situations, would you say, necessitate the use of Vipers and the Viper specialists? I've been thinking about diorama ideas, and I'm trying to imagine how to portion out the Vipers. Or... if the Crimson Guards are let loose, what kind of situation would necessitate the deployment of a Crimson Guard platoon?

Interesting question. I don't know if there is an official position on this by way of the comics or some other source.
One half-baked idea I've been thinking about implementing in my own little Joeverse is that different types of Vipers actually represent Cobra cells located in different parts of the world, and each adopts their own armor look, colors, special focus, etc. So rather than Astro-Vipers being actual space vipers, they'd be the name chosen by a cell of particularly space-obsessed Cobras whose equipment matches their vibe. Maybe Alley Vipers are the Cobra cell in Sao Paulo or another mega city, Techno-Vipers are a tech-obsessed Cobra cell in Berlin, and so on. I'm not totally sold on this idea yet, but I like how it breaths life and color into the idea of Cobra as a global affiliated network, rather than being singularly top-down controlled by one ruler. CC would still be the figure at the top, with the biggest and toughest army (blue shirts and classic Vipers, backed up by CGs, BATs, Eels, etc.), but there are all sorts of other leaders over different cells around the world.

The comics created a chart at one point. It is at least a little tongue in cheek, but I think it's a reasonable starting point. Here is one page of it:

Yes, I guess that it has, if we believe that silly number.
I remember a similar discussion to this one on the HissTank forums last year, and that same comic book spoof page was brought up, which suggests just on that single page alone that COBRA has a global deployment of 265,500 uniformed personnel. At present , the entire United States Marine Corps numbers approx. 181,200 and most other countries could never even dream of that. COBRA command certainly could not. Al-Qaeda worldwide operations numbered from 31,400 to 57,600. Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham has an estimated 12,000 to 15,000. Al-Nusra Front had an estimated 5,000 to 10,000. Boko Haram had an estimated 4,000 to 6,000. Ansar al-Sharia in Libya had an estimated 4,500 to 5,000. Abu Sayyaf had an estimated 200-400 (down from an earlier 1,250). By that logic, my guess would be that COBRA could never exceed 25,000 to 50,000 members worldwide.

Crimson Guard has always seemed more of an offshoot of Cobra like a private military firm run by Extensive Enterprises and the Crimson Twins the way that Blackwater was run by Erik Prince. I also think Crimson Asp is part of the Crimson Guard and not so much with conventional Cobra. |
