The armed forces, even when operating in a joint forces capacity, always maintains a chain of command. The G.I. Joe team, when introduced by Generals Austin and Flagg in Larry Hama's 1982 original story "Operation: Lady Doomsday", is introduced to the reader by it's real name at the Pentagon - "Special Counter-Terrorist Group Delta", which is given the Code Name: G.I. Joe. They are a "tier one" special operations force of the United States Army, under the authority of the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC). While other branches of the armed forces have their own special operations units, service members can volunteer for selection to Special Counter-Terrorist Group Delta. If they pass selection, they move to the next phase, with some even making it into the G.I. Joe Unit.

Yes, certainly. Mainframe was among the first four Marines esg2145 started us out with at the beginning of this thread.

With all respect to those who served in all branches, when it comes to the debated Mega Marines, do you think that the writer of the file cards did not realize the difference between a soldier and a Marine? That person could have been under the impression that the word "soldier" was a generic term for a military person. If I remember right,Mr. Hama was not writing all the file cards at that time. As for Mirage's additional file cards, I call laziness. Again, I state this with all respect towards those who know and served.
If this is the case, then they could be considered Marines. |

If this is the case, then they could be considered Marines. We don't even have to speculate if they did. As recently as June 23rd, 2018 Kirk Bozigian, David Kunitz, and Kurt Groen sat in a convention room with many of us HissTankers at Chattanooga, Tennessee and explained the Mega Marines concept, among other subjects. It was very obvious that they were proud of their moldable Bio-Armor (Play-Doh) and Monster Blaster A.P.C. vehicle. They were clearly focused upon impressing young children and creating enjoyable play features at that time. Names had to sound exciting to impressionable kids, such as "Mega Monsters" and "Mega Marines". Okay, they now had the word "Marines", and in G.I. Joe ARAH who did they think of? Gung-Ho, somebody at Hasbro responded. Okay, they put him on the team. Heck, even chose to make him the team leader (they did the same with Sgt. Slaughter a few years prior, and that worked). Then they needed a driver for the fancy new vehicle, so who's a good driver? Clutch, somebody at Hasbro responded. Okay, put him in the set. But not every character has to be an old character, so make some new characters. Mirage and Blast-Off were created. The Mega Marines firefighter, Blast-Off, was never appreciated or remembered, but somebody at Hasbro years later saw potential with Mirage, and his tooling/character was revisited again four more times from 2002 to 2005. I do suspect the Slaughter's Marauders G.I. Joe subgroup had some influence on the Hasbro design team that created the Mega Marines, even if they don't openly admit it. The team is led by a Marine, has a firefighter in the green armored vehicle with them, everyone else is a soldier with the exception of the lone Marine leading the group, etc. Even a fancy name gimmick which doesn't accurately represent the team, like Slaughter's Marauders. Slaughter's Marauders? Marauders are those that roam from place to place making attacks and raids in search of plunder. I don't ever remember the good guys doing that. Additional thought: When G.I. Joe did come back in 1997 with new people writing the file cards, ever take a look at the writers' names on the back of the packaging? David Lane, Terry Wheeler, Brian Mulholland, etc. In the years to follow, they would go on to work with Master Collector/Fun Publications, and help to create many of the Club exclusive products and convention items.

One can make the case that Nolan "Ice Storm" MacPhee could be a Marine. His rank is listed as a "Sergeant" and his skills include "marine combat". One could easily make him a Recon Marine or a Critical Skills Operator. Marines in these MOS's are eligible for the combat diving school which I would think this version of Ice Storm would have training in.

You're right about Ice Storm. I believe that was Hasbro's original intent in 2011 or earlier when Sgt Nolan A. MacPhee was created, but somebody changed that to PO3 Nolan M. Ligotke in 2014 when he was released as a JoeCon exclusive, and they had him wearing a Calico Jack on a black rectangle to hint that he was a Navy Hospital Corpsman SEAL.
